Hotel in transition--good potentialPosted Jul 23, 2015
Stayed two nights as a "jumping off" place to explore Cape Breton. Hotel is well-situated but the locals didn't know it by its Best Value name as it had recently changed from the MacPuffin. Much renovation was going on so our room was in a separate building behind the main building. Room was nicely appointed and beds were comfortable. However, only the next day when we returned to the room, only one bed had been made. The ad on Expedia indicated a free breakfast, and when I asked about it, the registration person apologized for not having one but gave me a free voucher for two breakfasts at a cafe attached to a motel across the street. Once the renovations are complete, this will be a good place to stop and convenient for visiting other sites on Cape Breton.

a sleepless nitePosted Jul 19, 2015
Pros: location, close to the causeway.
Cons: whole reno job
Location: we just needed a one night to continue our travels.
the room was very old, it smelt musty. the tv did not work properly had to ask how to function this antique. The swimming pool was not functioning and also they no longer served a breakfast. The a/c was very old window type.

Our stay at Canada's Best Value InnPosted Jul 8, 2015
Pros: The room was clean
Cons: Get the pool working and the wifi and provide breakfast as advertised. Check the booking before de-activating the keys
Location: We didn't spend any time nearby as we were going to a festival in Canso. There is an A & W next door so we were able to get morning coffee at least
They advertise a pool, breakfast included and wifi. There was no pool, no wifi and no included breakfast. They offered instead a 10% off coupon at another hotel. We booked for 2 nights, and paid for both nights in advance, and when we came back on the second night, we could not use our keys. We went to the desk and they said they had changed the key because we had only paid for one night. When we pointed out that we had paid for 2 nights they activated the keys. This was not good service on top of all the other things they did not offer in spite of the advertising.

Not a good hotelPosted Jun 22, 2015
Location: No much
Check-in was confusing...my friend had 2 rooms booked by them 1 order by Expedia??? We were given the suite at the back...the Air Conditioner blew-up when it was turned on...The television didn't have channels working, so we were moved to another room after technician came..."HE" wondered why we were at the back units instead of the one's in the main building, WHEN NO ONE WAS THERE...We also had to go THROUGH LOOSE GRAVEL ( probably put on for the snow or ice, but never swept up) Something very dangerous for motorcycle...Finally settled in with our 5 television channels with very poor quality and no remote. Deb took a shower and Fred next door (also taking a shower) got a cold awakening...But they did have a pool...no water in it but maybe that is why they were able to have a low rate... I am still waiting for my "no problem" wake up call arranged with the front desk that evening. Needless to say we cancelled our stay for the following 2 night return stay and stayed in Sydney NS at the Hearthstone Inn, Very nice with super friendly people

Maritimes visit...Posted Oct 28, 2014
Location: We didn't stay in Port Hawskbury, travelled the Cabot trail so stayed at Hearthstone on the way and Puffin on the way back...
Maintenance is the key...simple things like dead plants hanging out side window!!! to broken chairs in room..(chair would have collapsed if we hadn't noticed before sitting it in) .Light standards outside with arms hanging off....Really? how much does it take to remove a spent pot of plants? Also bathroom door does not close and fan did not work.... + room is advertised as continental breakfast which in truth was 10% off brekkie across the highway. On a positive note room was much cleaner than Hearthstone across the highway (rugs were quite worn) and the waitress at the Hearthstone was a treasure (Dolly) one of the best.....

Basic side of the road motel.Posted Oct 18, 2014
Very basic motel. No frills but no problems. Skip if you are looking to spend lots of time in your room or if you want any degree of luxury. but it is fine is you just need a place to sleep for the night.

A Turn OffPosted Oct 18, 2014
Pros: The bed after 18 hours on the road
Cons: Change the flags.
Location: Very few exciting things. We attended a funeral.
I was booked and paid for this hotel so had little choice but to stay. The Canadian and US flags hung on each side of the entrance but they were reversed. They did not know flag protocol and really didn't care since they were the same the following day. Other than that the hotel was simple but clean.
