“Very tired rooms... needs a facelift”
An iconic local hotel deperately in need of a major facelift/renovation. The rooms and corridors were extremely shabby. However, a great central location next to downtown and the Millennium rugby stadium. I couldn't understand why the rate was so cheap, but once I went into my room I did...
“Great location”
The hotel is across the street for Cardiff Castle and in the city center. It's a historic building ungoing exterior maintenance (as of Jun 2011) with very weak air con.
“Wonderful Trip”
The hotel is in a great location and the staff were very friendly and helpful!
“pleasantly surprised”
After reading several so-so reviews we were pleasantly surprised to find a hotel that matched its star rating and was a great value with an included full breakfast. A classic old hotel, it looks faded from the outside, but it has a freshly renovated classic lobby, time worn corridors. We were greeted by a newly renovated room -- tasteful modern style, very comfortable. If you are a light sleeper ask for a room facing the car park (back) as these are quiet, and the windows are single glazed (Castle Street is a busy road). Excellent price on hotel parking but arrive early as their lot fills.
“Older hotel with a great location”
This older hotel has all the quirks that come with an older building, but it makes up for it with a great breakfast. Barcelo Cardiff Angel is an exhibit in combining modern conveniences into an older building. After you walk up the grand front staircase, you are greeted by a receptionist behind a modern marble desk typing away on a computer. Above you hangs a giant chandelier while fellow travelers type away at small internet booths in the corner. The rooms have all the modern conveniences: TV, bathtub with shower, and an elevator to get to your floor. However, the elevator is very small, the shower controls are tricky to operate, and the small hallway leading to the bathroom is very crowded. The other nice thing to mention is breakfast. I think it is pricey stand-alone, but we had breakfast included, and it was very delicious. Fruits, eggs, bacon, toast, cereal, etc. If you want an "old europe" experience, this hotel is for you. You can get the feel without missing out on modern conveniences. Otherwise, consider a more traditional hotel chain. As with most hotels in Europe, internet access is overpriced there. You are better off finding an internet cafe or a coffee shop offering free wifi.
“regreted”
I liked that the hotel was historic in nature, the staff were GREAT! The bed was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever been on. For the price, was unhappy. Location was good, very centrally located to what my needs were. Would recommend and go back if the bed situation were corrected. I am planning to be back in Cardiff in Dec. and looking at other hotels rather than the Angel.
“As described ... a good value”
Rooms are large, especially by European standards. The bathroom was remodelled and very clean. It won't win any design awards, but it is very comfortable. The location is fabulous, it is right in the center of town.
