“Best hotel in Puerto Viejo... But...”

Very nice hotel. The staff is very friendly, everything we asked for (cereals etc) was immediately fulfilled. The rooms are very small, we were a family of 5 in a junior suite, and it felt a bit suffocating... compare to the other hotels we saw nearby, we were in a palace

“Amazing tropical retreat at a boutique hotel”

This boutique hotel was more than anticipated! The photos and reviews don't do it justice. The hotel was very well kept and the decor was clean and modern - a cool juxtaposition to the jungle spot it was nestled in. There was a perfect mix of the nature and all the niceties of home - screens on the doors and windows, etc. There were the anticipated insects, lizards, frogs and birds, which felt completely natural in the setting. The hotel is small and even with other guests it felt very private and romantic. The beach is right across the street and amazing. There is a little section that feels very secluded that is set apart from the road by vegetation, a sitting area, and a lounge area with beds with curtains. We couldn't believe how few people there were on the beach at the hotel and nearby. The hotel employees were mostly very helpful and accommodating with a few who stood out and took care of us for the whole trip. Outside of those individuals the customer service was inconsistent at times, but never bad. There were partnerships with tour agencies to explore the area. It was convenient but I would recommend finding a place in the town to set up tours instead. Food was pretty good at the hotel and the staff was very helpful recommending places in the town about 3 miles away. Drinks were good, but mild. Over all it was an amazing trip and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic and adventurous trip in a beautiful location.

Area recommendations
The town is very small so it is easy to navigate. I would recommend using tripadvisor.com to find places based on reviews. I would also suggest going on tours - we went to some islands off of panama, snorekeling, ziplining, and horse back riding.
Getting there
Be ready to take taxis and navigate the bus station if you fly into San Jose. Be advised that there are TWO Puerto Viejos. You want Puerto Viejo de Limon , or just tell them la playa.
What to pack
bathing suits and sun block! it's very casual and humid, so there is no need to bring anything too stiff.
Nightlife
There is very little night life - it's a small town. If night life is what you are looking for this is not the place.

“great place in a laid back part of the country”

we loved staying at le cameleon, it was beautiful and met some nice fellow guests. breakfast could have included a few more food items without an upcharge, but the coffee was great, peaceful atmosphere, with light chill music wafting in the air, dinner was pretty good, took cabs into town and local bus to visit manzanilla, nearby. the beach, hammocks, and outdoor lounging beds were comfortable in an amazing location.

Getting around
we rented bikes to see some of the area, saw monkeys and a sloth alongside the road, a great bakery coming into puerto viejo, fun small hippielike town, great beaches, rough waves, a fun relaxed, place to visit!

“Hotel lacking professional management equivelent to a four star hotel.”

When we checked in the A/C was turned off and the room was extremely humid and hot. This was disappointing after the long 5 hour road trip from San Jose airport to the hotel. After ten minutes in the room the toilet began overflowing. The hotel then gave us another (hot) room. It took about 3 hours for the A//C unit it cool off the room once we figured out the complicated programmable thermostat. The next day after a hike into the hot steamy jungle and returning to the room the maid had shut off the room thermostat and the room was once again hot! The wash basin in the new room we were given had a very slow drain indicative of a need for drain problems. On several occasions after returning to the room towels were removed but fresh ones were never replaced and we had to call. The hotel design is modern and unique when compared to the other more rustic and beautiful hotels in the area as it is a concrete structure painted white. White floors, white ceilings, white walls, white furniture....after a day or so I began to get nauseated from all the white surfaces! Structural upkeep is not being maintained. This is a very humid and wet climate. The exterior white surfaces were not being power washed frequently to remove the mold and mildew. The interior concrete floors which were painted white were peeling and botched concrete repair patches were everywhere.

Area recommendations
Puerto Viejo, Limon.
Outdoors or beach
The excursion companies in Puerti Viejo are awesome. Take advantage of the day trips into the jungle, rivers and countryside as they are awesome and the excursion company staff are highly trained and professional.

“Wonderful, exotic etreat”

Le Cameleon was everything we had hoped for and more. Wonderful, luxurious boutique hotel surrounded by jungle, adjacent to private beach. Not only was the comfort of the room outstanding, we were surprised to sse the room decor change color each day. Delightful surprise. The staff was exceptional and friendly and helpful in every way. And we are still raving about Chef Marco's food - we loved the complimentary deluxe breakfast each morning but often came back to the hotel for lunch at the Beach Club and dinner at night under the stars. Very nice all around and we would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Must see
As a lover of flora and fauna, I would recommend two sanctuaries that rescue abandoned or animals in recovery. The Sloth Sanctuary north of Cahuita on Rt. 32 and another small sanctuary located just a mile or two south of the hotel that rescues sloths and baby howler monkeys. They have two tours a day, 9:30 and 11:30 and allow you to play inside the baby howler monkey cage while you're there. Both sanctuaries are serious about re-releasing all animals bak into the wild if appropriate.

“Loved it, didn't want to leave it!”

We were very happy with our staff and our stay at Le Cameleon. Not to mention the private beach is amazing! We encounted a small problem when the maintenance staff were painting the room next door and our room smelled like paint. I suffer from frequent migraines, commonly induced by strong smells, so we asked if they could move us and they obliged by putting us in an upgraded room for the rest of our stay with no additional charge. Very happy with our experience!

Area recommendations
We enjoyed the local restaurants: Soda Johanna and Rio Negra. These are within walking distance of the hotel. In order to get to Punta Uva or Puerto Viejo, you would need a bike or car. Bike rentals are much cheaper at the bike shops than at the hotel! We really enjoyed the Jaguar Animal Rescue, within walking distance of the hotel. It is on the way to Punta Uva, and well worth the admission $.
What to pack
Lots of bug spray!

“Best Hotel I've stayed at”

This is one of the best hotels I have stayed at. all the staff were extremenly helpful and nothing was too much for them. The hotel setting was brilliant and fitted well with the astheticas and the enviroment. The rooms were a good size and the bathroon fantastic. I loved that the hotel was all white and they used different colours for the furtniture everyday. The pool, bar and restaurant area were very chic. A briiliant boutique hotel all in all and well worth a stay if you are looking for a bit of luxury. Bonus is that it has its private beach as well will great beach beds.

“Excellent for people that love Nature!”

Every thing was good enough for the price, but when we ask for the jacuzzi, it was out of order, and the television didnt function for more than one day .... The personal service was excellent. For people who like nature and no technology distractions, it is perfect.
