Nice hotel but not good enough for the price

Pros: Pool area (great when there is no rain) and seating area in reception area. Also, very close to everything, great italian restaurant next door
Cons: needs upgrading, paint, cleaning
Location: great italian place next door (not the one in front, the one in the rear)
We only stayed one day at the Le Cameleon and it was relaxing. The place is very nice from the outside, the pool is really nice and very clean. Their beach access is accross the street. The room was not bad and not great. Safe did not work, TV did not work at all (not a big deal since we did not want to watch anyways) but still. The room had lots of mold at the windows (due to the moisture), one faucet in the bathroom did not work well. Hot water took 3 minutes before it finally came. Beach area accross the street is nice but it was very noisy and you can really only sit on hammocks. the beds on the beach were too dirty and should really not be there. Food in the beach restaurant was good (pricey but good). Breakfast was not good. Some fruit and bread and that was it. There are many better breakfasts in town. Restaurant is not great and overpriced. Overall the place looks like that it was really great when it opened and now it looks dated. Painting everything white in such tropical climate is a terrible idea because everything now looks kind of dirty and moldy.

This was our first time visiting Costa Rica. Nice hotel, clean room, very friendly stuff and overall good service. Felt like we were in the middle of the jungles! Also, best beach in all of the Costa Rica, waaaay better than Pacific coast. Crystal blue ocean, lagoons are romantic, amazing experience overall. Would stay here again :)

La Cameleon

Pros: Nice private beech,
Very nice people and staff. The hotel is making an effort to give an upscale looks but the facilities do not support this. The internet reception does not work in the room. The air conditioning did not work and could not be fixed during our 5 day stay. The TV works after following very specific instructions.

Pros: Friendly and helpful staff.
Cons: A coffee maker in the room would be great, but you can get coffee sent up if you want.
Location: Wildlife viewing. Bike rides. Jaguar rescue centre within walking distance. Good beach.
We took the time to contact the hotel prior to our arrival as we required assistance booking a transfer taxi from San Jose to Le Cameleon. We spoke to Sylvia on the phone and she organised the transfer arrangements. On our arrival we were greeted by Sylvia and her colleagues and made to feel extremely welcome. This is a small hotel and we spent 8 days here but could have stayed longer. Our room was on the second or top floor as there are only two floors, great views into the tree canopy's which was great for wildlife viewing. The local wildlife seen from the hotel included a Sloth who was resident in the tree outside the reception and visits from Toucans and humming birds and many other colourful birds. Pleased to report the wildlife (bugs etc) remained outside the room. There is a pool within the hotel grounds and there is a beach club across the road with sun loungers and hammocks. Breakfast was great and taken in the hotel restaurant, we did not eat in the hotel restaurant for our evening meal as we were out and about and there are so many cafe/restaurants to choose from in the area. Supermarket within walking distance for all your needs. Bike rental across the road.

Great hotel but a bit expensive...

Posted Nov 2, 2013
Pros: The grounds were amazing and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. Also the food at the restaurant was the best around by far.
Cons: The management if you did not know they were management you would think they were guests at the hotel.
Location: Long drive from the airport but great if you like surfing and a more laid back vacation.
The grounds were amazing as the pictures do not do it justice. The staff was beyond words especially the wait staff they did everything in their power to make a great experience. Right across the street from the ocean maybe a 100yards to the ocean if that and it was a very nice beach. This hotel is a bit pricey but if you go cheap in Costa Rica it might not be a very pleasant trip so well worth the money. The only thing I did not care for was we thought the management acted like guests. If you are paying for a service you do not want to see management eating breakfast with you every morning very unprofessional. You as the guest should always feel special and feel like they want you to come back and with the staff I felt like they gave it their all but with the management I felt like they could care less. All and all Costa Rica was not for me but if you like surfing and hiking then you have come to the right place. I do not have kids but I would suggest this is not a great destination for kids as it can be a lot of down time aka boring:)

Great place to relax.

Pros: We liked everything about this hotel.
Location: We recommend visiting the sloth sanctuary, chocolate forest, national park and other beaches nearby.
We went to Costa Rica to visit our daughter who is doing research at a field station in the rain forest. A young Costa Rican who works at the station, which is also in the Limon province, recommended this hotel to her as a good place to spend some time together before visiting the station. We had a wonderful 5 days. I can't say enough about how special the staff was. One afternoon there was a sloth near the restaurant and the young lady who was working at the front desk came to the beach to get us and take us to see it. It was Carnival in Limon, including Puerto Viejo, and one of the waiters encouraged us to go to see the bull riding. What fun! The hotel was also visited by howler monkeys for 2 days and we enjoyed watching them running around in the trees. The food was good and the free breakfast was nice - freshly squeezed juice, fresh fruit, eggs done 3 ways, toast, muffins, yogurt and cereal. Beverages were served at the lovely beach which had chaises and cabanas. Behind the beach was a casual outdoor dining area where lunch was served until 5 pm. My husband and I speak no Spanish and thought we would have to rely on our daughter to translate, but the front desk and wait staff were fairly fluent in English. We would absolutely stay there again.
