“Comfortable, conveniently located, friendly staff, plentiful breakfast”

My family and I visit this wonderful little town every year for Thanksgiving to see the beatutiful Christmas light display on the river. It may not be the Marriott, but it's not what I expect. All I want is a comfortable room (comfortable in temperature, beds, etc.) safe, clean place to stay, and this place has it. There are many places located nearby to eat, shop and sight-see. Good rates too. Felt like 'part of the family'.

Area recommendations

Carlsbad Caverns and the beautiful Pecos River. It's charming, friendly and small.

When to go

Carlsbad is lovely anytime, but gets quite hot in the summer. Go in the fall to see the bats fly out of the Caverns. The Pecos River is beautiful and provides a special area for swimming complete with lifeguards. Or go in the winter during the holidays and see the beautiful Christmas on the Pecos light display.

“Smelled like paint thinner”

The look of the hotel from the outside was fine but the inside was terrible. The room was outdated but worst of all was the smell! I don't know what was going on but the smell in the room was like paint thinner. The bathroom smelled even worse. I had a headache in about five minutes so we left.

“STOP Don't bother with this one.”

We were told rooms were remodeled, well the lobby was! the bathtub was peeling, bathroom was filthy. This was one of the worst hotels I have stayed in. We should have gone back to the Best Western Stevenson --much better for the price.

“Great choice in Carlsbad NM”

Carlsbad has many hotel choices. This one is a great price, clean and great service. Indoor pool is a plus and the breakfast is convenient and delicious. I'll def be back

“Nothing worked”

“Clean and friendly”

Suite was nice, very comfortable bed, none of the vending machines were working so had to leave hotel to get any drinks or snacks. The town is very small so restarants are very few. Will stay there again if in Carlsbad

“Decent, but maid service a bit lacking.”

The hotel was near one site (Living Desert Zoo) but across town from the highway to Carlsbad Caverns. Staff was friendly and helpful, though the maids failed to resupply shampoo, conditioner, etc., and coffee after the first night. We spoke to the management, and the next day we were better taken care of. The room was spacious and clean. Fridge, microwave, and hairdryer were a pleasant surprise. The breakfast was a little spartan, and some jellies seemed to be quite old. They did have a decent variety of cereal, yogurt, etc. The pool was clean, and we enjoyed time in the hot tub as well. We were overall pleased with our accommodations.

Area recommendations

We went to see Carlsbad Caverns, and were not disappointed by that segment of our trip. However, we had planned to "live it up" with evening dinners at local restaurants, but the only places we could find were Denny's and IHOP, and a number of fast food places. We had expected to find several "charming" shops to spend our extra time and money in, but were sorely disappointed with that aspect of our expectations. A huge amount of road construction was underway, which cannot be helped at times, but we found the town of Carlsbad to be a sad excuse for a vacation area. If things had been different, we probably would have opted to spend another day or two in Carlsbad. Even so, the trip was very successful, and we found all the people with whom we came in contact to be extremely friendly and helpful.

When to go

It's so hot in the summer, but the caverns are a consistent 56 degrees, so that's a plus. We went in July, and were not particularly uncomfortable, though of course most of the day we were underground.

Must see

The Caverns, of course, though the "Bat Flight" was a bit underwhelming as only 8 or 10 at a time flew out, with a total of maybe 200 altogether. We understand that the lack of rain has caused most of the bats to find other "hang-outs".

Shopping

There is none.

Dining

IHOP and Denny's, and several fast food operations were all we could find.

“Nothing fancy, but great service”

The hotel needs some updating and the beds are less than luxurious. The pool water was a little green...not sure if it was just the local water supply. The staff was exceptionally polite and helpful. The breakfast bar had a good variety and quantity. We were put in a suite above the pool and lobby which was great with 3 kids. It's NM, but it met my expectations.

Must see

This hotel is very close to the Living Desert and Zoo, which was worth a walk through.

“OK Room But staff not too friendly.”

Price was high for the room. Staff not knowledgeable with surrounding such as restaurants that are no longer in service.

Area recommendations

Stay at the Holiday Inn Express. Much cleaner and Nicer with better room price.
