Friendly budget hotel

Posted Apr 21, 2014 on Hotels.com
Hotels in Cartagena are very expensive, so this was a great budget option. The hotel and rooms are very simple, with no frills, but the hotel is friendly, clean and safe. Only disappointment is that there is no hot water, though this is apparently quite common for hotels in the area, and is really not so bad given the heat. It is outside the old walled city in the neighborhood of Getsemani, but you can walk to the entrance of the historical center in just 5-10 minutes. The neighborhood is a little bit less polished than within the city walls, though I preferred that as it had a bit more character and was (slightly) less touristy. The staff here was incredibly friendly and helpful in providing recommendations for things to do.

Consummate Excellence

Posted Mar 4, 2014 on Hotels.com
After a rather mediocre experience at a guest house in Bogota, I must admit that my experience at Villa Colonial was a very pleasant surprise. Located a very leisurely 15 minuets from the historic cultural heart of the city, for the adventurous, Spanish-speaking guest, it is also less than 20 min. from the beaches of Boca Grande. Coupled with this, in the same neighborhood where Villa Colonial -Getsemani- is filled with great cages, restaurants and other businesses, all of whom are extremely sensitive to foreign guests. For younger guests, Getsemani is also filled with late-night pubs and clubs. The staff at Villa Colonial were phenomenal!!! Polite, patient and knowledgable, I have already decided to stay there again on my next stay in Cartagena.

Great value for money

Posted Jun 28, 2013 on Hotels.com
Don't expect the Sheraton but this nice guesthouse is a great value for money. Rooms are small but confortable, including flat screen cable TV, own bathroom, aircon and fan and free wifi. There are a few rooms in the front of the hotel with a balcony which are charming and a bit larger but are noisy at night due to the nearby bars. If you want piece and quiet, ask for an inside room with no windows. Staff is super nice and helpful. The Getsemani area is about 10-15 min walk from the old walled city in an area where there are a lot of backpacker hostels and restaurants. The hotel does not offer breakfast but a restaurant one block away offers great homemade food including nutella pancakes. I would certainly recommend this to backpackers or travellers who are OK with simple hotels.

Worth the money

this quaint hotel is well located in the old town of Cartagena and is very reasonably priced. You get a clean room and bath, nice people, relative quiet in a small, Spartan room. Small is actually an expansive word here, the room is tiny at about 120 sq/ft including bath. There are no places to hang clothes, or even put your luggage really. If you're going to hang out in your room you'll get claustrophobic, but if you're one to go out and see Cartagena and want the room only to sleep in and shower, well this is an excellent option. Another plus is the cheapest beer in the old town and a nice patio on the second floor.

Nice service but disappointing

Posted Dec 12, 2012
Pros: The staff
Cons: no windows and the neighborhood
Location: Just outside the walled center of town, not a long walk, but not as quiet as the rest of central Cartegena
The room has no windows except for one looking into the hall. The bathroom also has a window into the hall. This in combination with the lack of color in the room makes it feel a little prison-like. The staff was really nice and we left early and they only charged us for the day we stayed, so they are very customer friendly. One other thing to note, the neighborhood is a little sketchy, it might not make some people comfortable.

Good budget option in Getsemani

Posted Oct 5, 2012
Pros: The staff were super friendly and a great backpacker location
Cons: Sheets and towels were very tired and needed replacing
Location: Lots of backpacker hostels and bars nearby. Some great cafes (especially Gato Noir) around the corner for breakfast
Hotel was undergoing some renovation, however it was clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Both the air conditioning and fan worked (which was a blessing!) and we had a room with a small balcony overlooking the street. Many rooms however have no windows which would be a drawback. Hotel is secure and well located with several cheap bakeries, cafes and bars nearby. A good budget hotel overall.

Ok for one night, not more

Posted Aug 19, 2012
Pros: Service and value for money
Cons: Loud: street noises, people coming home in the middle of the night etc
Location: In the middle of getsemani, good for adventurous couples, not for families or people who seek calm and peace
More than ok for the price we paid but loud and not very comfortable.
