“A++ for Las Americas”
I visited Colombia for the first time during February 2012 for a medical meeting at the Las Americas Convention Center. This was the perfect setting for the meeting. The convention center is connected to the hotel by a walkway that passes beneath the street. This makes getting up, enjoying breakfast, and getting to lectures on time easy to accomplish. The hotel itself is beautiful, modern and professionally staffed. It's situated on the beach, but it also has it's own private pools (the one on the top floor of the hotel is stunning). The Torre del Mar is connected to Casa de Playa which is a more traditional/tropical style but equally as nice.
I traveled with my wife (who is Colombian), 2 year old, and mother-in-law. There was something for everyone at the hotel. My son and mother-in-law attended the kids activities in the pool during the day and they loved the young ladies who ran the club. The hotel, and Cartagena in general, felt very safe (probably safer than many U.S. cities). Cartagena's number one draw is tourism, so they really do a great job making sure the tourist are both safe, comfortable and have a great time while visiting their city.
We ate breakfast (which was included in our room price) every morning. There were tons a options, many of them native dishes to Colombia (arepas con huevos). In general the food seem to be less processed/more natural than food in the U.S. That may contribute to the low levels of obesity seen in Colombia.
