"Nice hotel, but you need a car"
Overall we had a great time here, the hotel was good and I would say 4star is about right but you need to be aware of the cons. Pros: Nice rooms, friendly staff. I saw some reviews where they felt the rooms were a bit worn, but ours was perfectly fine, air conditioning, small fridge and all rooms have a balcony. Breakfast was included and good and catered for all (including lactose and gluten-free!). Opposite is a private beach for the hotel, free sunbeds & towels, also nice hotel swimming pool with bar. Hotel has private car park, no charge. There is a supermercato about 10 minutes walk, behind the hotel, through the park Cons: if you want to have a hotel/beach/hotel holiday then no problems. But for getting to Catania you need transport, it is not a short (or nice) walk. The local buses are not reliable. And if you want to explore Sicily then you definitely need a car. Restaurants: we did not try the hotel restaurant so I cannot comment. On Viale kennedy there are some beach cafes and restaurants which are fine, but for nicer restaurants you need to go into Catania. Finally, although the hotel is about 4km from the airport, there is no direct bus and the airport taxis wanted 20 euros which we thought was ridiculous. So yet another reason to hire a car! Overall we had a great time, and esp after we hired a car we were able to explore a lot of east Sicily. So I recommend this hotel!

"A gem of a hotel in downbeat location"
A game of two halves - the hotel was excellent : caring staff, and impressive reception area and our room on the second floor had a ceiling with a genuine classic fresco on it. All very stylish and comfortable. But walk out the door and ....opposite are run down 1960's charmless apartment blocks, and to the right are derelict buildings and buxom 'working ladies' sitting outside on chairs at all hours. However just around the corner was the start of the trendy 'eating out on the street' area and it was just a short walk to the main shopping street and the amazing fish markets and central squares. So as a hotel, hard to fault, but be aware of the location, but then Catania is a fairly earthy town in total !

"Going Back in Time"
It was a very nice hotel. It took me to a bygone era. Breakfast was amazing (you could find from individual nutella packets to individually wrapped parmesan cheese) and I loved to find in the bathroom all the toiletries you used to find in hotels years ago. Not just the shampoo and the lotion you tend to find these days in most hotels. A full length mirror and a 5 or 10x make up mirror would have been highly appreciated, specially considering the light in the bathroom. But after talking to the stuff I found out they were working on it and some rooms already had the items. I was in the Audacia room and it was beautiful in an old fashion style, with high stenciled ceilings. The hotel was exactly what I wanted. and more than I expected considering that the tourist industry is, unfortunately, cutting corners everywhere these days. And trust the staff in their choices for restaurants. The first one they recommended was one of the most inexpensive and yet best restaurant I ate in the entire 12 days I remained in Sicily. If I ever return to Sicily no doubt I'll book the Liberty Hotel again.

"Central haven"
This is a great little hotel for a city break. It couldn't be more central and yet relatively quiet and peaceful. The handsome ex - prince's palace is in a tiny side street only yards from the two main central squares. Unfortunately, to keep these piazzas traffic-free, the one-way system funnels some traffic past one side of the hotel, but the double glazing is excellent, the air-con is quiet and very efficient and although usually rather sensitive to traffic noise, we had no problems and slept very peacefully. Our room was stylish and comfortable, with huge bed, previously-mentioned air-con, good bathroom, fridge/mini-bar (reasonable prices) and flat screen TV. No tea/coffee facilities, which seems the norm in Italy. Breakfasts were relaxed (if there were set times we never discovered them!) with good array of juices, cereals, fruit, cake (for breakfast?? Who knew?) eggs and pancetta bacon. But basically elaborate 'continental' style, not the massive displays typical of big resort hotels. Wi-fi is free and good, although you keep having to log back in, and you can borrow laptops to use in the lounge. The reception/lounge/bar is small but elegant and comfortable, with staff who make you feel really welcome. There is a sunny roof terrace where you can have drinks ferried up, although a few pot plants would dress it up a bit. it was a lovely base for a week's city break, gave us everything we required, and we would be very happy to return.

"Nice hotel in heart of Catania"
We were first time visitors, didn't know what to expect of Sicily. Flew to Catania so booked a hotel in centre & hired a car. Most streets are narrow & one way & finding the Katane at 8pm was hard - post code & satnav doesn't get you there. Later I set my Tomtom to a suitable street intersection, after that it worked. When we finally found the Katane, not so impressive from the outside. But when you go in, it's like a tardis. Big spacious reception, nice bar & lounge, excellent restaurant. Also a quadrangle with tables & canopy around the edge, lovely for an evening drink. Lounge as well had a function room, we were treated to an excellent piano recital. Hotel staff were impeccable & charming, taking my car off to underground garage each evening for me. Etna wine is great & not so expensive. Would I stay there again? If I wanted to stay in Catania, yes. The only downside is fighting your way out of town through the fish market to visit other places. But you're not so far from Syracusa, Etna & Taormina; we made it to Ragusa & Palermo as well. Sicilian driving as well is... different
