This is a real gem in the Heartland. My children live in Cedar Rapids, and I visit frequently. Traveling from Chicago I always disliked my options in this city for weekend visits. I love the hotel at Kirkwood, it is very comfortable, well appointed rooms, and I love sipping a glass of wine in the very comfortable lobby.
The outside patio area is fantastic, staff tries at all levels to be friendly and very accommodating

I have paid a lot more for a hotel not as nice. I got in late, the clerk greeted by my first name and said we have been waiting for you. The breakfast was a lot nicer than I expected. The rooms were clean, the bed comfortable and the location was near the interstate. No complaints whatsoever.

After I booked this room, I read some reviews that weren't very favorable, so I was concerned about what I would find when I got there. The room was clean. The hallway had a slight smell of cigarette smoke, but it was minor. The bathroom could use some updating, but, again, it was clean. The main complaint by others was the breakfast. There isn't much. If you're good with coffee, a muffin or a dish of cold cereal, you'll be fine. Otherwise, go across the street to Perkins.

Set downtown just blocks from the Cedar River is the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, with over 5,600 pieces of art that include the world's largest collection of works by Cedar Rapids' own Grant Wood. Across the river is Veterans Memorial Stadium--home to the Cedar Rapids Kernels baseball team--as well as the Czech Village, an area centered around the city's Czech, Moravian, and Slovak heritage.
