“My favorite place to stay in Iowa City”

My family and I have stayed at Cantebury Inn many times. I love the on-site restaurant, the ease of getting to the hotel from the interstate, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. It also has a little more charm and individuality than many hotels I have stayed at. This past visit, we actually had a problem (busy New Year's Eve with lots of partying going on around us). A leak started from the ceiling of our room, with quite a bit of water dripping onto the bed and carpet. The response from the front desk was immediate, finding us a new room, helping us move our belongings, and apologizing profusely. Even with the busy holiday and noisy fellow travelers, we got a good night's sleep. Their hot breakfast is also very good, with a nice selection to choose from.

“My favorite in Iowa City”

I always stay at this hotel when traveling through Iowa, and I make the trip from Minnesota to Missouri frequently. The only disappointment I have ever had was when I found out that the restaurant is closed on Sundays. I love the character of the hotel and the friendly, helpful staff.

“Finally got to stay there”

Nothing wrong wth the hotel room. Everything was clean and we had no trouble with any of the aspects of our room. We were in IA City when it was very hot and humid out. The hotel hallways were not airconditioned at all, so that was the only uncomfortable thing about it. We have always wanted to stay there, but it was usually booked any time we tried before.

“Good hotel”

Hotel description was right on and provided a nice room along with great breakfast! On site restaurant was a bit pricey, though a discount is offered for guests. The kids loved the pool and the open air ceiling (with retractable roof?) was great. Initially the whirlpool was closed, but that opened up later. The room itself was to our expectation and comfort. Thanks!!!

“Good quality for the $$”

My only negative comment was on checkout. The girl working the desk was on the phone and ignored me.

“A lil better than I expected.....”

Town was booked due to home football game, so took our chances here. Hotel is a lil dated, but not too bad. The "canterbury" theme throughout was kind of funny, with gargoyals welcoming us thru the wrought iron gates...but the room itself was pretty nice..Our room was newly painted and the bedding and furniture was nice enough.Only complaint is that on second day, beds were made, but dirty coffee cups and other trash was not removed, and coffee supply was not replenished. would really not like a first floor room, as the pool can get pretty noisy and privacy would most likely be an issue. second floor with heat/ac on keeps the noise out. Bar/restaurant was convenient and the staff in there was nice. Breakfast was okay- lots of muffins, some cold cereal, and make your own waffles (which stick to the waffle iron!)

“Great service but outdated building and decor.”

The front desk attendant was very helpful and I rate the service high because of that. He went the extra mile. The have free breakfast, free internet and a free copy of the newspaper. On the other hand, the building is old and the decor outdated. Breakfast was OK and my room, a loft, had a funny layout. The Bed was comfortable and the bathroom worked even though is was small. I think at this price point there are other options that are better suited for business travelers.

“FILTHY HOT TUBS”

I was told by hotel staff that the hot tubs had been replaced and that is one reason, besides the new pool decking and pool re-do, that I decided to stay there because in the past, those areas were filthy. The pool was nice but the hot tubs were the same, old, filthy tubs. They used bondo to obviously cover holes or cracks in the tubs and they were, as usual, dirty. The room smelled so badly of cigarette smoke that not even an incense burner removed the nasty smell. This place can be lots of fun but they really have to do something about being more clean. GROSS, GROSS, GROSS!!

“Needs a" Make- Over"”

Over the past 20 years we have stayed here many times and have been fairly comfortable. The rooms are getting "aged" the TV did not work at all. The breakfast has really gotten worse, we did not eat either of the two days. The air-conditioner leaked constantly and we had to put a waste basket under it the whole time, the carpet was soaked from previous days. The whirlpool the first night was like inside a closet, too small and the jets were not functioning properly.For $50 more moved to another and it was no better. Will not stay again until new owners and re-modeling done.
