Verging in on 5-star level in many ways, this is a stylish and comfortable base in Kyoto. The lobby with its 2nd-floor balcony, grand columns and elegant staircase is gorgeous. The rooms are comfortable and stylish. I had a river view which was great, although I imagine the other views would be just as interesting. A thoughtful touch is a pamphlet placed on the coffee table, explaining items such as temples visible in the view. Extremely convenient location right by City Hall and a subway station. Walking or taking the subway to sights in Kyoto has its limitations, and taxis will be necessary sometimes. However, this location is among the best as a walking base, just to soak up the flavour of the city in general. The two restaurants on the 17th floor are almost as pricy as those in top Tokyo hotels ... but also equally excellent. The hotel stay itself, though, was very good value indeed, about the same price for three days as a single day in 5-star Tokyo hotels which the Okura runs very close. The 17th floor Orrizonte bar is also great for breakfast or a pre-dinner cocktail. The 2nd floor Chippendale bar is an English gentlemen's club oak-panel cliche and I loved it! For the post-dinner malt, heaven. The hotel's website uses the term "dignified" and actually, that is accurate. I would love to go back to this hotel for longer - and no matter what the length of one's visit, Kyoto itself always seems to reveal reasons for wanting to stay longer next time!

The location was great, right across the street from the palace and only a short walk from the subway. The staff was courteous and friendly. The people at the front desk spoke English and were helpful. As a budget conscious traveler the price was excellent and the room was the best by far of the hotels I have stayed at so far on my month long trek across Japan(I am in my thirties and by no means a hostel backpacker.)

Great location, clean, quiet and the room was very big compared to other hotels we stayed in in Japan. Can only recommend it. We didn't book breakfast as there is a Starbucks literally across the street from it. But we did use the laundry service, which was quick and not too expensive.
