“Stay somewhere else....”
Hotel service and staff was average, when I asked them for help or assistance they were very nice. Except when I asked for a wine bottle opener, they didn't have one in the whole hotel. So much for the honeymooners there........My low scores for this hotel apply mainly to maintenance of the building and rooms.
At first appearance my room was decent but after a few moments settling into the room I noticed the carpet was filthy. Dust and dirt everywhere on the floor. I ended up walking around in flip flops in my own room! One of the ceiling panels next to the back door of the hotel collapsed and a rubble of concrete and dirt lay next to the exit.
Bedding and comlimentary toiletteries was fine though, adequatly supplied, soft pillows and clean sheets, no complaints there...
The complimentary breakfast was typical and good. The staff was very accomodating. Typical fresh waffles, bagels, breads, toast, juices, coffee etc.
The hotel shares the pool with the Best Western next door. If you rent a car and often head downtown into Charleston, The Sleep Inn is conveniently located on the main road into town. Conveniently located next to fast food joints and grocery store. I won't stay here again though. For a $10-$20 more dollars a night I'm sure I can find a better place to stay.
Area recommendations
If you're a solo traveler and don't want to rent a car for your entire trip try and stay downtown Charleston. Everything in Charleston is accessable on foot or by trolley and it's worth the convenience of going back to your hotel room several times a day if it's located inside the city. Especially if you travel during the hot humid season in Charleston like I did, early June. It was too hot for me to stay outdoors for more than a 3-4 hours and because I had a rent a car it is was nice to have the convenience of driving back to my hotel room outside town to relax. Then I would return downtown when it was early evening and cooler.
The Isle of Palms, Shem Creek and Isle of Summersville which is northeast of Charleston over the Cooper River Bridge are worth visiting therefore on the days you decide to go that's the day worth renting a car. Unless you plan on sunbathing on the beach at Summersville, all three towns can be visited in one day. Visit Poe's Tavern on Summersville Island is my suggestion.
There are plenty of off the beaten path diners and restaurants that are just as charming and cheaper than famous restaurants. If you're a runner or cyclist, the run over the Cooper River Bridge is beautiful and full of local runners especially early in the morning before it gets too hot.
