“A real discovery”

Very well organised hostel, excellent atmosphere. I was at a scientific conference looking for a place to stay below exorbitant conference hotel rates. This accomodation provided all amenities (wireless works in the open areas but not in all rooms).

“Best kept secret!”

Perfect spot for what we needed! We came in for the Dave Matthews Concert and didn't plan on staying in the room too long...needed to drop our stuff and go...and then check out the next day. Just needed a place to lay our heads for the night. It was clean, friendly, safe and within walking distance to everything we needed. I would definitely stay here again -- and recommend it to others who need an affordable place to stay while visiting Chicago and who aren't planning to spend a lot of time in the room! They stored our luggage for us after we checked out Sunday morning...and arranged a cab to pick us up to take us to the airport that night. I'd definitely stay here again!

“Chicago's best hostel”

This hostel was comfortable and very clean. The rooms were nice and large. The linens were changed everyday. There was a large kitchen that was convenient to store your own food (on the shelf or in a large refrigerator) and to cook your own food. The location of the hostel was very close to the CTA, local restaurants and bars, and the Lincoln Park Zoo. I would definitely recommend this hostel for travelers that are planning on spending most of the day out in the city and really only need a place to sleep at night. The hostel also offered a pub crawl, free bbq cook out night, wi-fi, and lockers to store your luggage. I would definitely stay at this hostel again if I were to going to visit Chicago again!

“Excellent Stay at the Getaway Hostel”

The Chicago Getaway Hostel is great. We booked a private room with private bath. They were out of two person rooms, so they put us in a 4 bed room (just us). It was very nice. Large shower in bathroom and two bunk beds. The temperature of the room was comfortable as was the shower temperature. They could use some shelving in the bathroom and room, but other than that it was great. Breakfast was good, but everything had to be toasted and there were only four slots on the toaster for everyone. Maybe they could add another toaster. The employees were excellent and very helpful. The Lincoln Park neighborhood was fantastic and much better than downtown. More character. Be sure to check out the Free Zoo and Arboretum nearby. Price of hostel was about half the cost of a hotel in downtown Chicago.

“Great time”

Great experience for first time staying in a hostel for a 58 yr old. Nice, clean, friendly personnel and very helpful. Within easy walking distance of the red and brown line trains. Simple breakfast with bagels, fresh fruit and coffee. Nice common areas with plenty of free computers and wifi, TV and papers. Enjoyable.

“Basic, but very cute”

This is a budget hotel (easily the cheapest option in the area), but done in the best possible way. The private bedrooms are utilitarian, but the communal areas (where you spend most of your non-sleeping time) are very nicely done with tasteful decor in a modern-urban style. Well equipped kitchens make self-catering a joy (and they was dishes for you!). The chill out areas (inside and outside) are clean and tastefully decorated. The staff make an effort to enhance your stay (e.g. I was there for the Chicago Marathon and they laid on a free pasta dinner the night before for us). It's was a fun experience and you stand a better chance of meeting some other interesting travellers than in a conventional hotel, where the room is more appealing than the lobby. Oh...and surrounding area is cool, with easy access to the city beyond via metro

“Great neighborhood in Chicago to stay and price.”

Though not a Hotel but a Hostel, it was clean and in a Great Neighboorhood. Many Restarants and Bars to visit even Choice of Coffee Houses block away. For Price cant beat ! Not for those who want full privacy and no room TV of course .But young people from all over the world make for great conversations. Bus to Downtown was also a block away Broadway St ,with 2 buses going downtown with a choice of many stops to get off depending on part of downtown you want to visit. For bus to Navy Peir get off at Chicago Av or just before Rush Street with its restauants a great spot to get off .. Chicago Av bus goes to Navy Pier. Also from Hostel a block futher to the east of Broadway is Sheriton Av buses that also go downtown . The Lakeshore Park is just a couple block walk from Hostel and beaches across that park at lakefront has great skyline views. You will think you are at a Florida beach and ocean. If downtown at north end of Michigan Av the shopping street is North Av beach with a tiki bar .Awesome to be in a large city and can be on a beach also. Also great Breakfast each morning included . Only downpoint was if in basement it is just a bit damp but had many Hotel rooms more stuffy. Air condition worked fine. Beds are firm and linen was clean .Only issue for me was restroom privacy dont like to use restroom while others were in room. Again It isnt a Hotel if in a dorm.

My wife and I visited Chicago the second week of September and we loved the Getaway Hostel. In addition to choosing it since it was close to the Red Line (Fullerton stop) and inexpensive, a friend of ours who stays in Chicago every other week for business strongly recommended it. We were able to check in quickly and headed up to our private room. It was impeccably clean. It looked brand new, actually. The furnishings were bare - just a bunk, table, and closet, but really the only noticable difference from a hotel room was a lack of TV and private bathroom and a modern look (which we preferred). We had to use the public bathrooms, which were fine and never crowded. The only complaint I can think of was that our room didn't have A/C, but our overhead fan kept the room from getting too stuffy. Other rooms did have A/C units. Breakfast was pretty good, and we really liked having access to 2 full fridges and a kitchen for our food. My wife has health issues and must cook a lot of her food, and we couldn't afford to eat out, so it worked really well for us. The back patio was great, and they have free grilled food on Fri and Sat. Overall, we liked it better than a hotel, and since it was a lot cheaper than one, we plan on going back there. The neighborhood was really nice, too. Very picturesque, peaceful, and quiet!
