Nice place to visit stuff around Grant Park

Posted Mar 23, 2014
Pros: Location!
Cons: We were told to not bring our cooler in but we did anyhow, not sure why this rule was in place.
Location: Field Museum, Adler, Shed, and Willis Tower are all within easy walking distance. Pretty area around Grant Park.
Excellent location for a vacation to see the museums. The rooms were cold and the hallway hot when we were there in March. Nice pool and exercise room.

Location, Location, Location

Posted Mar 22, 2014
Pros: Location. Clean. Modern. Comfortable beds.
Cons: There is the sound of urban life to contend with in the evening so I wish we could have had a fan to mask the sounds of traffic/rail/sirens.
Location: Grant Park, Museum Campus w/Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, etc, Shopping, Art Institute.
This was our first time at the Essex. I was very pleased at how conveniently located the Hotel is to the activities we were planning to do in Chicago. Grant Park is just across the street. Walking to the Field Museum was a breeze. Also close to the Art Institute. I will definitely stay here again. It is a $10 taxi ride from the train station each way. There are many affordable places to eat or to order delivery from nearby.

Decent hotel

If you are not planning to stay in this hotel all day, this will be a nice place to just take a shower and sleep. My room was pretty clean although hallways look a bit old. Except one lady at the from desk, they all were very kind and friendly.

Small rooms... Nice pool..

Posted Mar 20, 2014
The room was tiny and had a strong cheap aftershave smell. If you get a groupon deal or a "special price" the view is the parking lot. The hotel was empty and I called the front desk to ask for a room with a slightly different view they said it would be a 50$ upgrade fee. Also they charge 50$ for parking! 1 block behind you can find a lot that charges 15$ for overnight. I did love the pool. I'd recommend the Hilton across the street. 3***'s

Great location, beautiful view

Posted Mar 18, 2014
Pros: Fantastic location, great views of the lake and city, comfortable rooms and excellent, thoughtful staff.
My fiancé and I stayed at the Essex Inn for four days/three nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We took the Blue Line from O'Hare and the train stop was within walking distance to the hotel - very convenient and much less expensive than cab - $5 each way. We had a king suite on the 12th floor with a wonderful view of the city and Lake Michigan - woke up to the sunrise each morning outside our bedroom window. The room was clean and very comfortable. The hotel is at such a great location - walking distance to many of the sites we wanted to see - the museums, Grant Park, Millenium Park, Navy Pier (a longer walk, but definitely do-able on a nice day - the walk along Lake Michigan is beautiful)- the hop on hop off trolley stop was steps away from the hotel for the other places we wanted to visit on the north end of the city that were not within walking distance. For $40 you can purchase a three day unlimited trip trolley ticket that will take you throughout the city. We enjoyed the commentary and stories shared by the different guides each trip. For nightlife, we walked to Buddy Guy's Legends - just a few blocks away, highly recommend Zapatista if you like Mexican food. We will definitely stay at the Essex Inn again when we go back to Chicago for another visit.

Ugly duckling on the outside but lovely rooms

Posted Mar 11, 2014
Pros: Staff, location, services
Cons: Exterior looks very dated, hallways are dark.
Location: On Michigan Avenue. Within walking distance of Art Institute, Millennium Park, several restaurants. A Trader Joe's near subway exit.
Extremely welcoming and solicitous staff were helpful throughout our stay. The free shuttle was very handy and the driver dropped us right in front of our destination. We took the Orange line train from Midway to Roosevelt Ave stop just a few blocks from the hotel. The Art Institute and some of the main sites are within an easy walk and the shuttle makes other destinations a quick ride away. Our train passes also worked on the city buses. We ate at nearby Yolk each day for breakfast. There is a small refrigerator in the room and tea and coffee-making appliance. The bathroom had a tub which I consider a necessity. Indoor swimming pool popular with families with small children.

Nice, clean, hotel at a good price.

Posted Mar 10, 2014
Pros: The price and it was clean and the rooms were nice.
Cons: The rooms are kind of small.
Location: It's a short cab ride to the museums and Solider Field and we walked to the Red Line train from there since it wasn't far.
This was our second stay at this hotel. It's easy to get to and has good specials on Expedia. It's clean, and the rooms were nice enough (although pretty small). It's a good hotel to stay at if you are just looking for a place to sleep while you're in town and don't want to pay $300 a night at the nicer places. The staff was nice and they had valet parking.

Nice hotel...good location

Posted Mar 10, 2014
Staff was excellent & very plesent. Pool was nice but cold (march). Restaurant was good (no contenantal break.). Clean rooms. The only thing that we really didn't like was that there was no adjustable temperature gauge for heat and cool air. Other than that, it was a great stay & we would come back!

Great Hotel for overnight

Posted Mar 7, 2014
Pros: That there was a restaurant inside the hotel.
Cons: TVs need captioned ability
Location: Not applicable
Only stayed overnight while traveling thru Chicago. I was happy with this Hotel. Restaurant inside was welcome. The Conceirge was great to help get taxi to Midway for my plane. Over all a very positive experience.
