Close to a beach

Posted Jul 22, 2014
Hotel not very family friendly. Pool small & dull, no vending machines, & the restaurant too formal. No other restaurants are close except a McDonalds. Staff was excellent & friendly; rooms clean. Can walk to the beach & Navy Pier if so inclined. However, if you're in Chicago with kids (which I was) I'd recommend a different hotel.

Not worth the money

Posted Jul 21, 2014
Cons: - Very long check in time - Long waits for a hotel elevator - The room has no closet or hooks to hang clothes (i.e. dress/pants/shirts/suits) - The security safe is 'discreetly' placed in the middle of the dresser top surface - The ironing board is just leaning up against a wall - The washroom has one hook for a robe, but no place to hang a body towel or hand towel - The sink design never allows for the water to fully drain (i.e. standing water is always present) - The air conditioning unit has the sweet sound of the engine on a 747 - Some pot lights in the room missing finished housing - Some pot lights had no bulb at all

the hotel is in good condition and the staff is friendly. rooms are nice. the bar serves great cocktails. location is also great and easy to get there...valet parking is far too expensive, there are cheaper options very close to the hotel.

Nice Hotel but wastes your time with long waits.

Posted Jul 15, 2014
Pros: The location is great. The rooms are nice and clean.
Cons: Coordination between valet parking ($65) and hotel staff so when you check out you don't have to wait 15-30 minutes for your car from valet parking.
Location: Navy pier is only a few blocks walk under the highway across the road. Many restaurants. Beach across the road. River walk/run. Ferries and boat rides
The hotel is very nice and located right by Navy Pier. However, we booked 2 rooms and arrived at check-in and had to wait over an hour to get our second room. The rooms were not even going to be on the same floor and the staff changed our second room floor 3x before we got our room because other staff booked our room for other guests waiting after the room was finally clean. Other guests had the same problems and complained about waiting over an hour for their room. The staff and booking and changing of rooms was very bad. Also the parking staff and hotel staff do not communicate well to get you out at the same time. They also after paying in advance put a hold of $200 on each room on our credit card without telling us. It has been 3 days and the holds are still pending on the credit card. We did not have room service or hotel charges so the hold charge was unnecessary and high for 2 rooms for 1 night. The pool is also located on floor 7. The photos make it appear it could on the roof. Had to wait for valet parking to get vehicle even though hotel staff got our bags at 11:00 for check out as scheduled by us with hotel staff in advance.

Valet Nazi

The W is an opulent Chicago hotel located in a terriffic spot. It is beatiful and most of the staff is great. The guy in charge of valet parking is rediculous. It will take at least twenty minutes to get your car and if you inquire about the length of time you are sure to be greeted with a sneer and sarcasm. The valet also removed my phone charger for some reason. Theh gave it back but it was a hassle. One bad apple spoils the whole bunch.and the valet manager is rotten.

All flash; no substance

Posted Jul 10, 2014
Pros: Rooms were clean, somewhat spacious and decent.
Cons: Customer service. Competency of staff in ability to do basic problem solving.
Location: Lots within walking distance. Magnificent Mile. Navy Pier. Millennium Park. Chicago Riverwalk. Yolk for Brunch. Giordano's on N. Rush Street for pizza
The only thing good about this hotel are the actual rooms and the location. The room was nice, spacious (enough) and comfortable. The location was ideal, especially for 4th of July. From the hotel we were able to see the fireworks at Navy Pier without any obstruction or crowds. The staff was disappointing. I realized that I didn't have a room service menu in my room, and called the "Whatever Whenever" line, where they said they would send one up immediately. 30 minutes later, no menu, so I called again wondering if they had the room number, to which they said they did and would send the menu up. At 9:00pm with no menu and kids getting hungry, I went down to the front desk and asked them. The woman at the front desk apologized and left to find a menu, came back and went to a different location. Came back and said she had her manager looking for one. (It's a room service menu, people...shouldn't take an hour to find one). Finally I asked if I should just go back upstairs and borrow one from the people in the room next door, to which she responded that they were actually getting one from another room. By the time I finally got the menu, it was nearly 10:00PM and my kids had chowed down on snacks that we had. It was ridiculous. Also only 2 elevators were working on Saturday night. For such an expensive hotel, the lack of service and competency was incredibly disappointing. This hotel might be good for singles looking to mingle. Otherwise look elsewhere. Especially for the $$.
