Fantastic view and nice location. Easy walk to restaurants and port. Hotel is quite dated but clean. Unfortunately, most of the staff was very unfriendly and asking simple questions seemed to be an annoyance to most of them. Such a disappointment since all of our other experiences in Italy were fabulous.

I stayed 2 night with no air conditional working properly at all. I had to open the door to have some cold. The toilet wasn’t working and they repaire it the last night after that I complained 5 times. The only response it the receptionist is (you see the hotel is old). Breackfat is not perfect at all. No frais juice at all and the crois and bad quality

We had 6 days at the hotel recently and had a pleasant stay. We had a sea view suite because we had read that some rooms were small. The room and whole hotel was incredibly dated and the shower tiny. Breakfast was very basic. I felt that it was over priced.

The location was fabulous. The pool area was great but sooo much chlorine that it was toxic and pool staff was awful - rude, lazy, unfriendly. The hotel is dated and needs a major facelift. Room view was good - bathroom old and small and not nice - basically everything needs to be upgraded. This property should not be a four star - without the location, it would be a two star maybe. Restaurant was poor - breakfast unimpressive - all pre wrapped foods. And we learned that in the past the hotel also owned the Sporting Beach across the street which would have been a nice amenity. It's name is misleading.This hotel is owned by the same family who owns the Grand Hotel which has been completely renovated and is lovely, though in a noisier part of town and does not have a pool.

I stayed for two nights and the only thing this hotel has going for it is it’s fantastic view and great pool area. Otherwise it is dated and in dire need of renovation. The staff isn’t very motivated and lots of things cost extra (e.g. Parking €20 per day). Wi-Fi reception is abysmal except for lobby area. Even there it’s patchy at best. This is definitely overpriced and not a four star experience (no working air condition in my room), not even for Italian standards.

Lovely stay
Very impressed with this hotel. We had a suite with a beautiful sea view and large balcony. The food in the restaurant is very good and the staff are excellent. A nice easy 15 minute walk into town.

Exceptional customer service and good professional attitude of all personnel involved. Perfect A/C Perfect location, with beautiful views and much quieter then the village center which is reachable in 15 min. walk or using a a convenient shuttle bus. Wifi unsecured connection makes it hard for some devices to work properly.

The hotel is dated but absolutely fine. It's a short 5 min walk into the center of town along the sea. If you can upgrade to a sea view it's worth it. The pool area is very nice looking over the sea and there are lots of sun loungers. Compared to the other hotel in the area it is good value for money but your pics won't be insta-worthy!

Beautiful sea views!
This hotel is well located in Portovenere. The sea views are gorgeous! The rooms are somewhat outdated and the beds are hard, but the pool, the ocean, and views are wonderful. The hotel is in walking distance to the main Portovenere port with lots of shops and restaurants. Pretty much the entire walk has a lovely slate sidewalk! The area is very clean and well-maintained!

The view from the balcony is stunning. The room size and the shower size are real issues if you plan on staying more than one night or perhaps two. The WIFI is a disaster! Staff is lovely and the hotel is very reminiscent of traditional Italian hotels of past times; that makes it very charming.

One of the kind in this area
Excellent service and location. Yes it is a typical European hotel in that the room is spartan, but nothing unusual for a non-chain hotel in Europe. The front desk staff were excellent, got us a balcony room, when that is impossible to guarantee on a third party site (like Expedia or Hotels.com), also sell bus tickets to La Spezia (cost twice as much on board) and otherwise very helpful. The in house restsurant was really nice, open air sea view, excellent service, not cheap but decent prices and great food. Breakfast was extensive. Bar prices a bit high but consider the location. Pool may have felt cold, but was so refreshing! Pros: service, breakfast, pool, location (almost a mile from town but no issue for us), restaurant. Sea view amazing, just make sure you have a balcony. Cons: bed very hard and pillows harder. No kettle in the room. Wi-Fi strong but the actual internet service behind it was VERY slow.

Beautiful location but a little outdated
This hotel is located in an amazing area...but you can tell the hotel has aged a bit. The bedroom lacked some of the current day amenities that we enjoy and the bed was not very comfortable at all. The staff was very pleasant and always available to help. And make sure to check out the restaurant...fabulous! Overall a decent hotel. Just don't expect up to date comfort.

Run-down hotel rooms
This is an old hotel that has not been renovated for quite a while. The bed was old and uncomfortable, the bathroom is very small, had to open the shower door in order to be able to move my arms inside. It is kept clean, actually, the staff was vacuuming the corridors very early every the morning!!! They say there is WiFi but we could never get a signal, neither could other guests that were looking for a spot with signal all over the lobby. The breakfast was good and plenty and the swimming pool is nice and big. I really cannot understand how this hotel got the 4 star rating!

Good Italian hotel
Hotel is situated approximately 1km from center of town 15 min stroll. Great salt water pool, parking sea view rooms. Staff very helpful and speak good English . Rooms and furniture are tired, but very clean and nice balcony. Great breakfast. Restaurant v good but menu a bit limited. Service overall very good. Definitely return.

The hotel is outdated. Rooms are clean, but they lack maintenance. It looks like you have entered a hotel from the 1970's. The location is great for travelling to 5 terrace. Only reason I give this hotel two out of 5 is because it has a great location and a pool-area. The breakfast was okay. I can not belive why this is a 4 star hotel, it reminds me more of a 2 star hotel based on its standards. WiFi was free of charge for 1 hour (you had to stay in the lobby to use it), but you had to pay around 5€ for more usage... In 2016???

Very nice position on the bay in Portovenere
Welcoming hotel with friendly staff situated about a lovely 15 min stroll along the waterfront from the small centre of Portovenere - we liked the location as nice to walk to and fro the promenade in the evening. Lovely swimming pool area (I think one of the only ones in the area at a hotel), although the beach club down below is not the hotel's - plenty of public beaches within a minutes walk though. The best bit was the view from the room's balcony - most rooms seem to have one, but ours was large enough for a sun lounger plus table and chairs - you could sit in the sun and look at the view of the bay all day! Overall, a lovely place to stay with my Dad while we were on a short tour of the Cinque Terre and surrounding area - recommended.

Great position but hotel sadly needs an upgrade. Common areas were from the 1970s. Pool area good but closes early 7pm I think. Bathrooms recently renovated and good but bed is of creaky wire type with mattress, floor was tiled and I could see footprints from previous occupant. Wifi hopeless

My wife and I stayed at Royal Sporting Hotel for 3 nights (first week of May 2016, somewhat low tourist season) and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It's located around 10 min walking distance to all the restaurants, beach, the old town, and other attractions. It's a little bit away from the center/main dock, so it's slightly quieter and you don't have to face the crowds of tourists coming on daytrip boats from cinque-terre or La Spezia. Staff were friendly, and the facility was clean and organized. The pool facing the sea, the bar and included breakfast add to the value. We highly recommend this hotel.

Great staff was the best thing about this hotel. Very attentive and accommodating. The location was 500 meters from heart of downtown area, where ferry to Cinque Terra departs. . Property, despite its age, was extremely well kept. Dated and Spartan furnishings in the room was only drawback.

We added PortoVenere to our itinerary after visiting Cinque Terre before returning to Pisa via the train from La Spezia, recommend you take the boat from PortoVenere to La Spezia.

I was in Italy for a Wedding and the Hotel enabled me to have a holiday at the same time. Wonderful time all in all. I would only say that the shower could have been bigger, I am a smaller lady and even I found it small. Everything else perfect.

Idyllic location, friendly staff
We loved our seven nights at this hotel. Super food - delicious fresh fruit and lots of choice at breakfast - and the evening menu changed daily so it was never boring. Staff were all conscientious and friendly. Wonderful pool looking out over the sea and very pretty location.

Nice town but Hotel is tired and 'garden room' is
Rooms are small and tired with noisy aircon, TV that makes popping sounds and loses picture and water drip from ceiling near room door. Garden room consisted of view of sheer rock wall which towered over our 4th floor room. Waited at reception to talk about garden room being misleading and walk in got ocean view room for €20 less a night with parking than my room I paid for in full 4 months earlier. On check out they gave us a discount but feel I must pass this on to other travellers so they aren't disappointed like we were.

Good place to stay in Portovenere
I wish our room had had a view, but it was generally a nice hotel. The restaurant had a great dinner and really nice view. Pool area was great. Pillows were really uncomfortable and the shower was tiny, but other than that it was a nice stay.

PORTOVENERE-BETTER THAN CINQUE TERRE TOWNS
We really enjoyed the salt water pool and the beaches. Arturo was especially helpful getting the internet and was great at dinner as our host. Definitely suggest you bipass Cinque Terra and stay here and then go visit Cinque Terre. The Castle Doria is an absolute MUST SEE.

Great place to stay when visiting Cinque Terra
We stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed the location and comfort of our room. We had a lovely balcony and good sized room. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was more than adequate.
