“A convenient bargain irish hotel”

I picked this hotel because it was convenient to the Shannon airport and offer good pricing. It is in a quiet neighborhood, has golf and an indoor pool and spa. There are two places on the property to eat and it is just minutes await for downtown Ennis. We used it as our base while visiting the Cliffs of Moher, Cong, the Ring of Kerry, Bunratty castle and folk park, Blarney castle and gardens, and Rock of Cashel and Waterford. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Area recommendations
All areas of Ennis are nice. It is a quaint smaller town that is easy to navigate, yet next to the major north south motorway so most of the western Ireland is no more than 2 hours away.
When to go
My wife and I like to traveling during the off peak time. Most sites in Ireland are still open in October, the weather is not bad, though you should expect rain and temperatures in the 50's. The tourist are gone, the hotels drop their prices dramatically and everything is on sale. A few of the lesser castles close in September but all of the major attractions are open. If you are a senior, over 60, like us always ask for the senior discount. Ireland has a very generous discount for seniors.
What to pack
Layers, layers, layers. The weather can swing from very cool, low 40's to warm, high 50's in a single day as the sunn comes up. Expect it to rain sometime during the day so always carry a raincoat or umbrella with you. With layering you can start out warm and discard layers as the day heats up. Pack a good pair of walking shows, preferrably boots, as most of the sites will be in grassy or muddy areas.

“Stay Here if you LOVE discomfort!!!!”

Broken shower led to scalding water, the rooms were FREEZING and they forgot to turn the heat on so my husband and I had to wait an hour before they even managed to turn it up. Our bed was two smaller beds pushed together, and the blanket which we were given didn't even reach the sides. It was like having a twin blanket on a king size bed... with lumps. The LOOK of the room was NOTHING as shown on the pictures here. Imagine a motel six, half a step higher. Maybe. We were hoping for a little luxury on our honeymoon. Never in a million years would we have anticipated this. The way we set up our trip, we stayed there our first and last night. Were it refundable, we would not have stayed the last, but oh well. That night, there was a wedding going on. The receptionist at check in was aware that my husband and I were checking out at 5am to catch a flight, but why is it that they put our room right next to the wedding? At midnight, on the first floor, there were drunkards WALKING BY OUR WINDOW. It was loud and creepy, and we had to call and request a new room... which they actually REFUSED. So angry. Upon checkout, they didn't even ask us how our stay was..... I think think they knew.

Area recommendations
If you're stuck in this crappy hotel, at least go to Bunratty Castle for the Traditional Folk Night. It's a short drive, and a really fun night!

“Quiet location, easy access to sites”

We chose the Woodstock because it was on the edge of the regional center of Ennis and allowed easy access to sites such as the Burren, Cliffs of Moher, and seaside towns. The hotel also had a nice pub and restaurant so if we returned from a long day of sightseeing we could eat right at the hotel. Also very easy access to Shannon airport 30 minutes. Staff were friendly and helpful. * Note if you are looking for night life or plan to do some pub jumping you may want to stay at a hotel in town as the Woodstock is out in a fairly rural area and quite sleepy in the evening. If we visit this part of Ireland again this would be our choice of hotel.

When to go
We travelled to Ireland in early March to try to beat the crowds. Be aware that a lot of the major sites are not open until after St. Patricks Day or in some locations April 1st or even May 1st. There were several places on our itinerary that we had expected to see and were surprised and dissapointed when it was closed. Check ahead of time
Getting around
If you are from the states be prepared for some interesting roads, especially in the Burren. Even though distances are short it may take a while to get there due to the curvy one lane highways in these areas.
What to pack
Rain gear is a must. It rained about everyday, but usually only for a little while. The weather changes very quickly here so be prepared for about anything.
Family-friendly activities
Ailwee Cave and the Burren Raptor center were good family destinations
Outdoors or beach
Kilkee beach and cliffs are a must see (free) and just as nice as Moher

“Nice golf course”

Nice older hotel with a great view of a golf course. Quiet neighborhood and good attached pub, but hotel walls a little thin.

“January 2011, Massachusetts USA. Looking forward to going back!!!”

We prefer to stay a hotel that is not on a main road. Quiet, low traffic, and nice views. That is exactly where this hotel was. Out of the way, and plenty of parking. We arrived at the hotel before check-in, they allowed us to check in early and were very pleasant and made you feel like family. After we checked in we had breakfast and told the waiter that we were staying there for a week. Due to the fact it was the off season and they had the extra rooms, he moved us to a room with a view of the beautiful golf course (the original room had a view of the indoor pool across the patio). The room was spacious and clean. We ate several times in the dining room and at the bar. The food was great. Although they were running on a small staff you wouldn't have known it. They made you feel like you were the only person staying at the hotel. Upon returning every night they asked about our day, where we went and what did. We asked for suggestions of where to go the next day and they always had answers and great directions. I would recommend this hotel to anyone I hear is visiting Ireland, whether staying 1 night or 1 week.

Area recommendations
"The Loop" in Ennis, Co. Clare. Blarney Castle, Bunratty Castle, Cliffs of Moyer, Everywhere you can squeeze in. Did not have a bad experience anywhere even though it was the winter/off season
Other
Rental car - ask many questions. Each rental company is different. Our rental car was twice as much as we expected. Automatic vs. Manual transmission, do they REQUIRE or RECOMMEND insurance.

“Thank you to everyone at Woodstock. It was wonderful.”

It had been a long flight and our family was tired. We arrived at the hotel prior to check in and were greeted very warmly. We were allowed to check in early which was wonderful. It was cold in Ireland the week we were there. Each evening when we returned to the hotel there was a roaring fire in the fireplace to welcome us. It is a feeling of comfort I won't soon forget. The bar was cozy and a fantastic place to unwind from the day's excursions. Again, staff everywhere OUTSTANDING! The room was nice and we felt comfortable and safe.

Area recommendations
Ennis was a fabulous neighborhood/town.

“"Very relaxing"”

The hotel was wonderful and everyone was very friendly. Upon check-in we needed to find an ATM to get money and the desk clerk gave us the euro we needed to get a parking spot in the lot downtown near the bank. There is a great pub and restaurant. Also a nice golf course, however, we didn't have an opportunity to golf. The rooms were very spacious and ours had a huge bathtub. Very good value. Very close to many attractions. We would definately stay there again.

“An Irish Gem”

The Woodstock is a beautiful hotel settled in the countryside but only ten minutes from the center of Ennis. The location is perfect for a relaxing stay after a day of running around sight-seeing. It has all the amenities you would need and a wonderful staff to round out the comfort of your stay.

Area recommendations
Spend time walking around Ennis and exploring the shops. And don't forget a side trip to Quinn, just 12 miles away to see the abbey.
Nightlife
The neighboring town of Ennis has several wonderful pubs. But music doesn't get going till 9:30 pm. It's worth making a night of it. You can start in the Poet's Corner in the Old Ground Hotel and continue walking up O'Connell Street stopping in any pub where you hear music. End up at the Preacher's Pub in the Temple Gate Hotel. It'll be a fun night and worth staying up late.

“Very Enjoyable Stay”

Hotel Woodstock was in itself an enjoyable experience. The front desk/bar/restaurant staff were very helpful. The room service was slightly lacking in day -to-day details (ie. dirty dishes left, trash not emptied, etc). For such an extended stay(8 nights) we felt some isolation from other locations. We were about 20 minutes from Shannon Airport. The inside restaurant/bar was fine but the next-door pub was not a good choice for meals. There was free parking for our rental car and wifi in the lobby (when it worked).

Area recommendations
We really enjoyed our day trips to the Cliff of Moeher & the coast, downtown Ennis and the Clare Abbey, The Blarney Castle and village, The Dromoland Castle grounds, and the Bunratty Folk Village. Those were our highlights.
Traveler's tip
WHEN we do this again, we will divide up our stay and move our headquarters around just a little more. We found that the 2/3 hour drive to some of the places we wanted to visit were too far when we added in the drive back time. We were able to see lots of beautiful country but it did wear us out more. We used a GPS (nicknamed Lucy) and maps, and both needed updating. Lots of new roads not documented. We made it home every night though. The natives were very friendly and forgiving.

“Great and economical”

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Woodstock Hotel. The staff was 5 star! We also loved the onsite bar/restaurant that had a huge flat screen TV to watch sports on. During the evenings when we were too tired from sight seeing it was the perfect way to rest, recharge and mingle with others. (BTW, I'm not a fan of rugby!) The hotel is also in a great location. We were only there for a 4-day weekend, yet we were able to visit: Enis, Doolin, the Cliffs of Moher, Galway, Cork and the Blarney Castle.

Area recommendations
This trip was a surprise for my partner who has family from Ireland. It also turned into our babymoon.
Traveler's tip
You must get to the Cliff of Moher!
