Old but beautiful

Posted Jul 29, 2014
Pros: Location in the city
Cons: Upgrade furnishings
Location: There are a number of restaurants nearby and the university is in walking distance (up a very steep hill).
The rooms are very quiet. The hotel is located in a very easily accessible and central location in the city. The breakfast is pretty good, it just doesn't change from day to day. The furnishings and carpets are old and tired, a bit dirty on the floor. Overall, it has a real beauty and was once elegant. The staff were absolutely wonderful!

A blast from 1926!

The Astoria was built in 1926 it's a bit worn but 100% functional. It must have been the most elegant place in its time.

Great location, not a great hotel

Posted Nov 26, 2013 on Hotels.com
Staying here was like being transported in time to the 1950's. From that perspective, the hotel has that old charm. However, it is like staying at a hostel rather than a hotel. The rooms and the lobby are very old and you can tell they haven't had maintenance in a while. The staff was not nearly as friendly as at every other hotel where we stayed in Portugal. However, I am not sure whether there are any better options in the historic area. I would suggest getting to Coimbra in the morning and driving somewhere else at night rather than spending the night there.

Pros: Location location location
Cons: A bit dated but added to the quaintness
Location: Everything was within walking distance
Parking was tricky but if you don't mind paying a small amount it was ok...once parked we did not need the car at all... Buffet breakfast was good... Staff very helpful

An old gem

Posted Sep 14, 2013
Pros: It has a wonderful faded charm that is unlike any hotel we've ever stayed at.
Cons: The bed had no box spring which made it slightly lunmpy, but I certainly slept soundly.
Location: Hotel Astoria is right next to the Mondego river in the heart of the tourist district of Coimbra.
The front desk staff were a bit stiff, but helpful with whatever you asked of them. The breakfast room lady was the real sweetheart, always smiling. Architecturally and historically, it is a really interesting place. There is so much of it that has survived from the days when staying at a swank hotel was a signifier of social standing - and therein lies its charm.

Riverside location close to the heart of things

Posted May 27, 2013 on Hotels.com
The Astoria is beautifully located overlooking The Mondego. A walking tour proved that it is centrally located, making visits to many important sights easy, given a few days. I enjoyed my stay at The Astoria and appreciated having a large room with a fine view. I was put off by the faded and dirty padded chairs in the room, so much so that I did not ever sit on any of them. The hotel is old but has lots of charm. I would stay again and hope for some updating of furniture.

Needs updating. The dining area however was very nice. 15in box tv was horrible. Staff not very helpful or pleasant. Would not stay there again.
