We chose this hotel as it was five star and near to Fort station and we were taking a early train to ?Kandy. It didn't disappoint. Rooms are not huge but fitted us a cot and a lot of luggage. Bvulgari toiletries are nice. Pillows are excellent, a real. Bug bear of mine in many hotels. The pool was very nice and the pool bar serves food til late which is a bonus. Breakfast is extensive and the high tea is very good. All in all a good stay.. Just need more lifts!

The hotel is very impressive! It has a beautiful entrance area, staff could do with being a little friendlier at the door. And maybe a little less chaotic. The room was fantastic had a great view of the sea and everything in it was at a high spec. The pillow service was good! The beds were comfy and the bathroom was clean and functional! The walkin wardrobe in our room was brilliant.

Firstly, the service and help provided by the staff were exceptional. The hotel is a little dated (undergoing renovations) – but spotless. Few tips: 1. Meals: The buffet breakfast is great (A$21) and for the budget conscious (Hilton :)) the bar in the lobby has good lunch and evening meal ‘specials’ – (A$6). 2. Touts: Beware of touts who approach you when you leave the hotel (every time) and say they work at the hotel (they don’t) - but they are polite. 3. Sri Lanka Rupees: Available at ATMs at airport or currency exchange counters (24 hrs) 4. Taxi to hotel: Taxi counter at airport – 2650 rupees to airport (+300 rupees you pay if going by Expressway (recommended). I arranged the same driver for the return trip to the airport. 5. To do: train from Fort Station to Kandy (1st class about 900 rupees) – about 2.5 hrs. I hired a car and driver in Kandy (The Kandy Travels) to drive me back to Colombo via the Elephant Safari Park, Kegalle (2000 rupees for 10 min ride + tips). Prepare for long, slow drive - 3hrs +. Only charged 6000 rupees for driver and car. Used same driver and car to visit Galle Fort and Jungle Beach next day. 1 hr on expressway (you pay toll) – but expect 1 hr to get to expressway in heavy traffic. Again charged only 6000 rupees for driver and car. Great value.

Sri Lanka’s capital sits on the Indian Ocean, and its colonial heritage is quite evident. Close to the harbour is Fort Clock Tower (once a lighthouse), Pettah Market, Old Town Hall and adjacent Viharamahadevi Park and National Museum. Several canals wind their way through the city’s backstreets. Colombo is 30 km (18.6 miles) south of Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB).
