“Delightful Oasis in Northern Queensland”

The Sovereign was such a wonderful surprise! Traveling to such a remote and relatively small town, my expectations for this property were not too high. However, the rooms were exceptionally clean, tastefully appointed and large enough for a bed and a seating area. The grounds were well cared for. The pool, an interesting "lagoon" feel amidst tropical folliage (a bit chilly in August, tho). The restaurant served among the best food we ate in Australia - comparable to many places we frequent here in the states. Further, the restaurant was beautifully appointed. The staff was accommodating. The wallaby and joey who met us in the parking lot were an added bonus. And the location was great for walking to just about anywhere. After seeing the location of other properties, I was not only thrilled about having chosen the Sovereign, but was also thrilled that it was such a nice property. If it were in any other city or country, I'd choose it again. Extremely comfortable and lovely experience.

“You need to see Cooktown once in your lifetime.”

I have always wanted to see Cooktown. On my two previous visits to Far North Queensland 1988 and 2002 the only way was via the Bloomfield track - no good if you are not a 4WD driver. This time the inland road, fully sealed, made it possible and the trip was well worth it to see the history and character of Cooktown. Sovereign Resort Hotel is by far the best accommodation. We had a standard room which on reflection was a bit of a mistake. Next time I would opt for an apartment with some sitting area. However, the room was clean and comfortable with a lovely balcony overlooking the pool. Very pleasant for a cup of coffee or glass of wine in the evening. Our meal on the balcony of the restaurant (crispy pork belly) was a sensation, especially as we arrived late on a Saturday night when everything else was closing but were given a table as house guests and made to feel very welcome.
