“Perfect Hotel with Character in Center of Copenhagen”

First time I stayed here. Very conveniently located to city center and easily reachable by public transport. Nice old style hotel but very well kept

“Underwhelming for 4 stars”

My main criticism of this hotel is the misleading 4 star ranking. They even have 4 stars printed on their brochures. However, this was really a 3 star based on my extensive travels and hotel stays around the world. My room was quite small, not a shock compared to rooms in London I've stayed in. It was a tiny room with a desk by the entrance that I had to side-step to pass. I actually paid for an upgrade so not sure what my original room was like. They called it a queen bed but in the US that is called a twin. The hotel building is supposed to be a couple hundred years old but the room didn't really evoke that. Also in the room itself they only give you a couple of towels, one glass to drink from, and just generally not much else. Someone else noted there is no bell hop which I thought was weird for a "4 star" hotel. On a positive note I would say the people were friendly and helpful, the location is great for sightseeing and very close to the metro which is good for getting to/from the airport and around town. I said I would not recommend it, as a 4 star, but if it was ranked 3 stars then I would say that is fair.

“Great location”

We spent two nights at the Phoenix Hotel. The location is simply fantastic - close to the metro, and to the Nyhavn area. The hotel itself was fine. My only complaint (bear in mind: I take reviews by Americans of European hotels where they complain about the room being too small with a grain of salt) was that the room was extremely small. I personally don't need a large space to be comfortable, but I think that replacing the large furniture in the room with smaller furniture would be a great idea, so the space would not seem so cramped as you enter. There should also be a way to hold the baothroom door open if you wish, rather than it banging every time it closes. Otherwise I would recommend this hotel, the staff were kind, courteous and helpful. Like most things in Copenhagen, the accommodation was a little pricey, but I think a way to overcome that is to spend a very short amount of time in the city.

“Nice hotel at a good price”

The hotel is situated in a very central location in Copenhagen and is within walking distance to most of the attractions. The hotel staff was friendly and extremely responsive to our needs and the hotel rooms were fairly spacious compared to rooms in Europe. Overall a very good experience.

“nice hotel”

Nice hotel, near Nyhavn, which is great and Amalienborg. Free internet in the hotel lobby. The room was nice and clean, on the smallish side, which was fine for just me. i would recommend it.

Area recommendations
Nyhavn is nice, near Amalienborg is also good. I would not recommend right near the central train station in the Tivoli area

“Great location - very small room”

Excellent location and decent room. However I was a bit surprised at the size of the room. I had a single and it was truly a single. I'm used to small European hotels, but for what I thought was business class hotel, it was small.

“Wonderful location for tourists”

The Phoenix is a very nice hotel. I knew that it lacked a/c, but I wanted to try it out since it was just one night pre-cruise. The lack of air conditioning was the reason we only booked one night pre-cruise and picked another hotel for the 4 nights post-cruise. I need my a/c. With the window open it was not bad though, as early June is not usually hot in N. Europe. The skylight blinds were open when we first entered the room, so it was very warm. Once we closed the blinds and opened the window it was not bad. The room itself was small, but comfortable and faced a courtyard so was quiet even with the window open. The gold trimmed furniture which looked dated in photos online, was very pretty as was the room. Very comfortable king size bed and nice linens. The shower is just open to the rest of the bathroom, but it was not a problem and normal in many Copenhagen hotels. It was clean and had all we needed. The best thing is the location! Amalienborg Palace is just around the corner! Close to Rosenborg. Nice inexpensive, tasty pizza place on the way to Rosenborg, and very close to hotel. Did not care for the young men loitering on the front steps. I don't think they were guests of the hotel. There was a lovely fountain in lobby, but it did not work and gives a bad first impression (what else is not maintained?), but the rest of the hotel was fine and well maintained as far as I could tell. I am very picky about hotel rooms, but this one passed as long as it stays cool outside.

Area recommendations
City center is close to everything. We walked to every site any tourist would want to see inside the city. We are retired and not in top shape, so if we can do it just about anyone can. Also a hotel near Norreport Station is a good idea. If you have the time taking the train to Hillerod to visit Frederiksborg Castle is well worth the time. Also a train ride to Helsingor and a visit to Kronborg Castle is nice, but Frederiksborg is better choice if you are limited time wise.
When to go
June is still cool but a good time to visit. We visited from June 5 to June 22. Not many people in shorts and sandals!! We prefer the cooler days for touring though. Especially since not all museums in N. Europe have a/c.
Getting around
If you get a hotel in city center, you can walk to most sites. Take the train if you want to visit outside the city. It was hard to figure out the train maps, but almost all young people speak English and are very willing to help. Make sure you have the correct ticket, as if you don't you pay a large fee/fine. Some tickets have time limits too. You can buy a 24 hr. ticket though. You also have to know how many zones you need on your ticket. We did have help from many strangers in figure it all out. Sometimes you have to get your ticket punched or stamped in a machine before getting on the train or bus. We did a lot of things wrong, but still somehow got to where we wanted to go. I believe there is a Copenhagen Card that includes train, metro and bus rides plus entrance to some museums. It may be the best way to go if you are in town for a few days and want to stay outside the city center or want to go to sites surrounding Copenhagen.
What to pack
You need a jacket in June. Long pants too, leave the shorts and sandals at home.
Must see
Rosenborg and the crown jewels. Amalienborg Palace, the museum, and if it is still open the home of the Crown Prince and Princess. It is being renovated for them and once they move in I don't know if any of it will be open, but I doubt it. Also Frederiksborg Slot in Hillerod is worth the train ride. One fabulous room after another plus the chapel.
Dining
Yes, it is expensive, but you can find cheap alternatives if you want to. We ate at an Italian restaurant near out hotel and spent well over $100 for dinner. The next night we had take-out pizza from a place near our hotel and it was no more than if we were still in Atlanta.
Family-friendly activities
Tivoli Gardens.

“Great Location, Good Service”

My husband and I stayed at the Phoenix to attend a wedding in Hellerup and run in the Copenhagen Marathon. The location was fantastic. We were able to take the Metro from the airport, it was easy to find. Nyhavn was close by, and 5 minute walking distance to the Stroget, Kastellet and other local sights. There's a Netto small grocery around the corner. Tivoli was about a 25 minute walk, and it was a 5 minute walk to the Kings Gardens and Roseburg Castle. The hotel itself is small and in a quiet neighborhood. It has a nice unattended interior courtyard where we read and had coffee and drinks. Our room was clean if small as most European hotels are. Ours could have used a little maintenance (a little peeling wallpaper and water stains here and there) but nothing that detracted from our stay. There was a minibar that we were able to use for our own drinks and snacks, which was nice to have. Room service was responsive and the coffee was excellent. The lobby has internet terminals with a printer that was convenient for getting tickets, directions to local sights and checking email. One note, we ran out of cash (Denmark can be expensive), and our ATM card didn't work. We hoped to cash a check at the front desk, however, they weren't able to help us. So make sure you have plenty of kroner! We got an attractive combined flight/hotel rate (thanks Expedia) and would stay here again.

Area recommendations
We rode bikes out to Frederiksberg Gardens, the park is spectacular. We were surprised to come around the corner and see the "summer" palace. We wished we could have spent more time here. Tivoli is a ton of fun. It's just a Danish thing - there isn't anything like it anywhere else. We had a lovely dinner and drinks at Nimb, listened to a concert, saw the Commedia del Arte performance, and topped it off with a beer and some carnival games (definitely go to the plate breaking booth - the prize? you break the plate. yay!)

“Better than I expected”

This hotel was a lot better than I expected, since I really didn't pay that much for it. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The location was fantastic-- right near Nyhavn and a metro stop. Also, the room itself was extremely comfortable with a great bathroom and a giant TV. I wasn't feeling well on my trip, but if I had to be sick I'm glad I was staying in such a nice place.

Area recommendations
I think the location of the Phoenix would be the best place to stay in Copenhagen. It's about a two minute walk from Nyhavn, which is beautiful, and from there you can take a boat tour to just about anywhere in the city. Also, there are metro and bus stops about five minutes away from the hotel.

“Thank You Phoenix!”

I was originally only scheduled to stay one night, but was so impressed I extended my stay and upgraded my room for the next two nights. The phoenix is comfortable and elegant, and the staff is friendly. The location is perfect for shopping and sightseeing. The Phoenix epitomizes the Danish "hygge" - from the rooms to the bars and restaurants. The only problem I had was that the windows are old and let through a lot of cold air, so the room can be quite drafty and it is difficult to get it warm. This was only a problem because I was visiting during the coldest week of the year! Thank you!
