Poor First Impression

Posted Jul 29, 2014
Pros: The setting
Cons: Attitude of reception staff, lack of air conditioning in rooms is a real problem in hot weather. No lift to second floor rooms.
Location: Okay for sightseeing with Fowey and Mevagissey nearby and a number of beaches.
Checking in for a four night stay my wife and I were impressed with the drive up to the hotel and the smart feel of reception - but then the problem started. The receptionist said we had booked two rooms through Expedia (we hadn't) and because we only needed one room we would have to pay a one night cancellation penalty for the 'other' room. Despite explaining there were only two of us, were married and therefore didn't need to book two rooms the receptionist was insistent we must pay the cancellation charge for the other room. She called for her manager who insisted we had booked two rooms and maybe our 'friends' in the other room couldn't come(even though, apparently, this other room was booked in my name)!!!!!! She was insistent our imaginary friends in the other room had pulled out despite my repeated protestations that only my wife and I had come on holiday!!! She again asked for the cancellation payment but I refused. I showed her the confirmation e mail for my (1) room and eventually persuaded her to contact Expedia.I did the same and the matter was quickly resolved. The hotel jumped to the wrong conclusion too quickly and were too heavy handed asking for a cancellation charge immediately. As first impressions go it soured our stay - as did the lack of air conditioning which made the rooms unbearably hot. We had good weather (22-27c) but the room was like a sauna and for a hotel of this standard to have scrimped on air con in simply unbelievable.

Pleasant surroundings

Pros: Some of restaurant staff were exceptional and others just run of the mill. Reception staff excellent too. Nice pool tho lockers we used didnt work.
Cons: Breakfast service
Location: Great easy to find location with lots of access to all the main routes.
Nice enough hotel and staff nice too. Most mornings for breakfast we did find there were items missing from our table like cutlery, milk, butter etc. Something different every day but irritating. Also usually a long wait for coffee and toast, we were ready to leave at one point when the coffee arrived. However good quality food when we did eat at the restaurants.

Luxury stay in country house hotel estate

Posted Aug 6, 2012
Pros: Lovely decoration
Cons: No porter
Location: Good access to the Eden Project
The hotel is a modernized country house with the guest rooms built into the hillside overlooking the grounds of the estate. The room is very modern, comfortable and spacious. We had a nice dinner in our room. Excellent swimming pool and gym on site. Good access to Eden Project. One downside is that there is no porter, a plus is that the rooms come with large balconies where smorking is permitted.

A Worldclass Hotel right on the doorstep!

Posted Jul 2, 2012
Pros: The view; the staff; the food; THE SPA!!
Cons: No lift to our room level; would benefit from a shuttle arrangement to the Eden Project (as the taxi service is £10 o/w.
Location: Gorgeous, luscious, splendid garden(s). Immaculate.
The jewel in the crown of Cornwall's spa hotels. Impressive drive onto the hotel grounds and it just got better and better as we entered the hotel itself. Our room was part of the 'added on' rooms with balconies - and I would recommend this over the main hotel room(s) for the sheer pleasure of morning coffee on a gorgeous balcony. We ate in both the dining area and the bar area and both were great, along with a substantial & delicious breakfast included with the room booking. The food was inventive, well done and beautifully presented - and they had the added touch of gluten-free bread (rather important as I am coeliac). The Spa was also terrific, with a stunning infinity pool, backed by a steamroom and sauna. My partner and I partook of the relaxation treatments available (facials in our case) and they were worldclass - Hannah and Corinna as the therapists - top-notch; David and Paula as the managers certainly know what they're doing. If there was a 'down' side it was that the rooms on the top floor where we stayed cannot be reached by lift - so make certain when you book, that you ask for rooms reachable via the elevator if you don't wish to take the stairs. The staff are very helpful and will take your luggage up (and down) - but it was the only odd design flaw in an otherwise flawless operation. Top marks to the Manager of the Cornwall Hotel - he has created and maintained an utterly superb place to stay.

The Hotel experience was very good the receptionist was very polite when we checked in and the staff in the restaurant explained the buffet etc they were a little slow at clearing away the crockery from our table other than that i can't fault it and the grounds were superb.

Lovely But!

Posted Feb 6, 2012
Pros: Locatiuon and style of decor/accomodation plus the facilities
Cons: Cleanliness and delay at breakfast
Location: Beautifil setting buliding and grounds.
Only a one night stop over but thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Some minor issues however took the sparkle out of what otherwise would have been a great experience. The shower water didn't drain away and when i looked at the trap it needed cleaning plus the shower base around the drain hadn't been cleaned for a while. It sounded like there was a TV or radio on all night which spoilt a good nights sleep which seened to come from below or above us but we didn't have guest rooms there as we were in the White House Maud Smith room??? Every time we walked around the bedroom the wardrobe rattled (either raise it on feet or attach some rubber grommits to where the doors meet the frame? Taking breakfast at approx 9am we had to wait nearly 30 mins for our choice to arrive and this because we spoke to a waitress to chase it up. We loved the Pool and Spa area but the water in the pool seemed to have too much chlorine in it as it was too strong to swim under water without goggles. Otherwise the staff and welkcome was warm and friendly and the grounds lovely.
