“Excellent base for Porto Cervo and surrounding areas”
Having booked a week ahead of the trip (June 2008) and read slightly mixed reviews, we weren't sure what to expect. However, the whole experience at the hotel was excellent and we'd recommend both Porto Cervo and the Hotel Balocco to anyone. Our room was a decent size with a very nice bathroom (towels changed every day) and a small but nice balcony that overlooked the fantastic swimming pool area and Porto Cervo beyond. Breakfast is fine, there's enough variety not to get bored. You can get snacks by the pool at lunch, and there's a very nice bar area with an outdoor terrace. There is no restaurant but there are a number of good ones within a 10-15 minute walk. A stroll down to the marina takes 15 minutes, and the walk to the centre of Porto Cervo takes 25 minutes (you don't have to walk on the main road, there is a path around the edge of the marina). A car would definitely help to get the most out of a visit. We went to several local beaches (be prepared to drive down dusty roads and walk a bit after parking to find the best ones), took the car on a ferry to La Madelena island, and visited Baia Sardinia (very nice). The staff at the hotel were excellent and really helpful even with limited English (though much better than my Italian!). Our return flight was moved from 10.15am to 6.15pm, and they were happy to let us have a late check-out, use the pool and facilities and stored our luggage while we had a final leisurely lunch in town.
