“Had a great time”
My wife and I just got back from a week at the OG and we loved it. The rooms are very nice but do have a bit of a damp smell probably because it was +90% humidity all the time. The beach and diving are great. We spent all morning on the beach went out for two dives after lunch and then sat on the beach again until sunset. We will definitely be going back.
“Nice hotel. Enjoyed the stay.”
We liked the seclusion of the hotel and the jungle like surroundings. The wildlife were a part of the charm of the place. We'd go back for sure since the staff was terrific. We only had a couple of complaints. The beds were very hard and there was not enough pillows. The Timeshare schtick started the moment we arrived. There seemed to be quite a bit of it. One staff member even told us how they were compensated for daily pay and successful timeshare invites. However, once we put our foot down and said we weren't going, they left us alone. The food. The variety seemed to be good at first, but it quickly repeated. And dried out and usually cold. They have to do better on the food.
“A bit like Fantasy Island”
Well, if you want to be surrounded by the thickest jungle, with a path that leads to a beautiful beach, and eat great food in a beautiful resort, this is the place for you. Yes there were timeshare people but we held them off with sticks and slept in and made it out without incident. Beyond that, the food and drinks were all fine. The water activities were all there and fairly reasonable. The pizza place is open till the wee hours of the morning if you missed your dinner. One thing, if you use the ATM to withdraw USD you will be charged a hefty fee (not the hotel's fault of course). I think I paid $16 bucks to withdraw $100 which of course, I'll never ever do that again. Bring your twenties in a smelly sock and no one will take 'em. The help staff were always top notch and easy to talk with. A great 'Fantasy Island' setting, rather than the hustle of Cancun. The ferry to Playa Del Carmen was a bit rocky, but in 45 minutes you are in another, more frantic environment to shop in. But next time we'll stay on the island and rent a small scooter. It is fun to buzz around the island in the breeze! There are more expensive accomodations on the island but this one is definitely in the top 90% and I don't think I'd want much more really. They put a bottle of champagne in our room because it was our 5th anniversary. Enough said, this is definitely worth a try if you can get a cheap airfare. That's the bigger issue of course, not the hotel...
“Quality has gone down since last visit”
We have gone to this hotel almost every year for the last 11 years. The last two visits have been somewhat disappointing. The previous visit, we were there in the off season, so we chalked things up to that. However, this visit, the hotel was full to capacity and things were still not up to par. The hotel had overbooked, so at first they tried to move us to the Allegra. Aft ter agreeing that we would stay at the Occidental, it took over three hours for our rooms to be available. We found that the food quality is less than it used to be. For example, the hamburgers at the beachside grill used to be delicious; now they are inedible, obviously not 100% beef and lack taste. We did have great food on the last night we were there; we wondered if perhaps a hotel critic/reviewer was staying there. Another disappointment was the quality of the alcohol brands. All of the alcohol was a no-name brand that tasted terrible. The vodka tasted like kerosene and was not drinkable. Again, on the last night we were there, branded labels appeared at the bar. Also, the bar by the adult pool is no longer open. Kudos go to the dive shop, which is consistently fantastic! The staff arranged for a private boat for us for the week, with a captain and a dive master. Also, there is excellent help on shore to take care of our gear, etc. Another plus is the friendliness of the wait staff. Everyone is always cheerful and helpful. For all-inclusives, this resort is the best on the island.
“Best Bang for Buck in Cozumel”
My family and I just returned from a week at the Grand (11/4-11/11) and it was perfect. The staff really went out of their way to make us comfortable and we were a bit needy having a baby with us but they were great bringing milk to our room and restocking our fridge extra full. The beds were a bit hard but the rooms were great, marble everything and Huge bathrooms. All the buildings were like condos seperated by jungle gardens. There is a lot of walking to navigate the amenities of the property and the mosquitoes are bad at night but tolerable with bug spray. The food was really good for buffet style food and hot (despite what others wrote). The beach was the best I have ever seen, we spent so much time snorkeling right off the beach and swimming in schools of fish and diving for starfish. My recomendations: Bring a big insulated cup for drinks, it can be a long walk to the bar. Bug spray is a must in the evenings. Bring your own snorkel and mask, the free rentals are cheap type. If you have kids bring snack stuff as there is none between meals. Bring a good camera. We loved this resort and cant wait to go back!!!
“Great sand beach”
This was low season and as a result some services were not available. As an example, the beach restaurant was not always open, the lobby bar was not always staffed with a bartender, one night the buffet restaurant was not open and it was difficult to get a reservation in the two ala carte restaurants. Staff was very friendly, everything was clean - fridge fully stocked with bottled water a real plus. They did try to sell us an "ownership" a real negative. Visited the Allegro owned by the Grand Occidental and when we go with our families I think we will book there - more kid friendly. Occidental great for adults. Beach was great.
“Not impressed”
Not a good honeymoon destination. Def. not a five star rating hotel
“Mixed Feelings!”
So, we chose this hotel because of the restaurants (6) that are advertised. Got to the place and it was very nice, but told that all the restaurants were closed other than the one beach club. That one restaurant was ok...what one would expect from the all inclusive beach restaurant. The room was nice, smelled a bit moldy and the window would not close. They were very good about fixing anything that was broken. We were upgraded to the Royal Club after two days because we complained about the restaurant situation. Also, there was only 13% occupancy at the time we arrived! That room was about the same, but did not smell, which was nice. After three days, they opened another restaurant for a meal, the buffet. It was good food. Over the next two days, they opened two restaurants, but closed the beach club and the buffet. The Sonora Grill was wonderful! The food was great and different. The Olivos was also good. Better than the buffet and Beach Club, but not as good as the Sonora Grill. After the first four days, the breakfast buffet was open each day. There were some issues with drink delivery and service at the pool/beach. But the facilities were very nice and the scenery was beautiful. In all, we had a great time! Met some nice people and any chance to get away is a great time! Diving was amazing. Palacar Dive shop on the premises was wonderful and I would recommend them for anyone staying anywhere! Diving with Martin was also a good dive group.
“coz”
Beautiful hotel and great staff. Very quiet as occupancy rate was 12-20% the week we were there. Only 2 restaurants were open due to the low rate. Food was good and staff was continuously checking on the customers. The diving was outstanding. The dive shop at the hotel has all of the equipment and is only 5-20 minutes to the dive sites. Highly recommend for all divers and snorklers.
“Resort was nice”
Just dont go during the off season. went first weekend in October and only 1 of 6 restaurants were open, disco was not open and pool side service did not exsist due to lack of occupancy. This was not disclosed when i booked the trip.. But overall resort is nice
