Our stay was impeccable. The staff, especially, were always on hand, helpful and very friendly. If you want a treat, good food, comfort, beautiful rooms, the Gilpin is the place to stay. Not cheap, but still worth every penny as you certainly get what you pay for.
It was very bad experience. We stayed 3 hours waiting to check in. most of the customers checked in 1 hour before us although we came before everyone. The receptionist was so rude when I pointed out to her that we waited for too long. They advertised the room is bed and breakfast and the breakfast is included. However in reality after we arrived they said we have to pay £25 per person for it. They also advertised the hotel as 5 stars, but in their sign it was 4 stars, but in reality it is less than 1 star. The room is so small, and smelly, with badly decorated/closure design. the carpet is filthy, became bald from too much use, and with many spots. The cushions appear as they never have been washed. The bed linens was not changed, and not clean. This experience spoiled our holiday.
A beautiful, elegant and peaceful setting. Lovely staff, all polite and efficient. Food and drink all as expected at a hotel with a Michelin star.
Perfect for a relaxing retreat away from the city.
Love this hotel ... makes you feel as if it’s really ok to relax and enjoy every moment. We were there for our anniversary after going there the year before for our mini moon . The food is just delightful in both restaurants. Can’t wait to go back ❤️
The property was in good condition so nothing negative to report.

Beautiful spa lodge and excellent food (although Spice was disappointing) but did not expect the constant heavy drilling from the hotels own building site. Disappointed with the noise and the hotels minimal goodwill offer of £100 to say sorry (against a £1,200 bill).
Gilpin’s greatest asset is undoubtedly its staff who are courteous, accommodating, friendly and funny. We loved our stay at Gilpin and it was in greatest measure thanks to them. We stayed in a master bedroom which was large and well-equipped. Extremely minor gripes include a catch on the door that didn’t work when the door was closed, and shampoo that was a bit oily for my wife’s taste.
Breakfasts were feasts. We also tried the Gilpin Spice restaurant after dark which was superb both in food and in ambience (helping us recover after a problematic train journey to the lakes).
Gilpin is situated a bit away from Windermere, roughly a £10.00 taxi ride to Bowness-on-Windermere town from which the cruises originate. For exercise the journey is certainly walkable but there is no pavement on most of the road and while traffic always slows to give walkers a wide berth, there are some blind corners that are a bit disconcerting. But that distance also positions it ready for country activities. We tried clay pigeon shooting with Michael Coates and a walk around Orrest Head.
I have no hesitation in recommending Gilpin for a “proper” hotel experience and midpoint convenience for tourist activities and country pursuits.
I thought the lake house was really luxurious - and the hot tubs and boats on the lakes gorgeous. On the downside I felt the website was really unclear about what you were entitled to depending on where you booked and I also had rather a nasty sickness after Hrishi - as there appears to have been gluten in my food.
The Gilpin is a beautiful cosy home from home hotel. As an interior designer I loved all the beautiful objects that made it truly stunning. The atmosphere was wonderful .. and the staff and food were truly fabulous. We were here for a little break after our wedding in Cheshire and it couldn’t have been more perfect .. truly can’t wait to go back. Martin and Jilly Parker Townley ❤️
Incredible grounds to the hotel and the staff are really helpful and attentive.

Best of the best in every detail from the room spray to waiters thanking us when they brought the food. We ate in both restaurants. Spice was unbelievable and unforgettable pan asian. Only things see as improvements is that we were charged extra for breakfast (usually included in Europe) and the newspaper. For the cost of the gilpin, well, I thought it was tacky. Overall a great experience.
The junior suite was not worth anywhere near the £385 per night it cost. Especially considering the dated bathroom.
I’d personally not bother with this hotel again. If you do, go for one of the newer rooms.
