Royal Station Hotel, Carnforth - seen better days

Posted Oct 29, 2014 on Hotels.com
We stayed at the hotel so as to get the charter train from Carnforth railway station the next morning. We stayed a total of three nights. Sadly the hotel appeared rather run down. It was clear that at one time it had been quite busy and popular and has a grand central staircase. However, it was in desperate need of renovation with paint and wallpaper peeling from the walls. The room itself was clean but the coffee cups and cutlery were not. The bed and mattress were clearly very old and not very comfortable. The shower was tiny and leaked in many places. However the outlook was very good and the room was a good size. Sadly there appeared to be no restaurants in Carnforth at all so we were reduced to eating a takeaway in the room. The first night we found a pub in nearby Warton, the Malt Shovel which was very good but stopped serving food at 7.00pm. The room was booked with breakfast but the first morning we had to leave too early for this. The second morning at 8:30am there was no one about and no sign of any preparations for breakfast so we ate in Carnforth station refreshment room which was excellent. We ate there on our last morning too as it was so good.

Overnight Stay

Posted Oct 29, 2014 on Hotels.com
We stayed overnight specifically for the Brief Encounter Train Special that left early so we only had to walk less than 100 yards to the Station. It wouldn't take too much to furnish the rooms (which are dated) in keeping with the golden age of train travel especially with a very big following that Carnforth Station has and all the events that go on. Toilet and wash basin plumbing definitely needs sorting. Staff friendly and pleasant and we enjoyed a nice breakfast.

They are trying...

Posted Sep 28, 2014
They are trying, but some improvements still need to be made - mainly in the bathrooms which are rather outdated. Pluses: Water kettle in the room Generous number of tea bags Hair dryer on the room New windows Nice decor Charming building filled with history

Central location

OK for one or two nights but not for longer. Room was OK but bar and other common rooms were shabby and basic.

Nice enough hotel to use as a base, lots of shops

Posted Jul 27, 2014
Pros: Nice big room for two adults one child.
Used as a base for overnight stay, you could check in at 2pm which was good. Lovely view from our window. Had a nice walk around, did some of the canal walk, I'm sure there is lots more to explore. Great book/gift shop two minutes away. Lots of places to eat.

The staff were very welcoming

Pros: Everything about the hotel was superb. I could not fault it at all.
Cons: I do not think you could improve the hotel.
Location: The location is the gateway to the Lake District, which is a beautiful part of the country.
The hotel was very pleasant, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The service was outstanding.

Solid no frills stop-over

Posted Jun 3, 2014
Pros: Check out time of 12 on the Sunday very fair
Cons: The breakfast was a bit expensive, at £8 for a teacake, toast, jam & a pot of tea
Location: Very close to the station: worth visiting both the Brief Encounter Heritgae Centre and the excllent Snug bar there
Stayed one night to attend a wedding party nearby, chceking in at about 4pm on the Saturday and leaving on the Sunday.

Convenient to all facilities

Posted Apr 27, 2014
Pros: We would say the friendliness of the landlady. The location was very good as 2mins from railway station. And it's on the main street in Carnforth.
Cons: The hotel could do with a complete makeover as it's full of character and it's a shame it's a bit run down.
Location: The location is fine as railway station is less than 5mins walk away. It's close to the lake district and not far off the motorway so very convenient
We booked this hotel as left to last minute at easter bank holiday and everywhere else was booked up. Ok it wasn't the most luxurious place I've ever stayed but it did the job. The bed was clean and comfy. The shower was quite powerful. We got used to the saniflo system by the end of the first night just a bit noisy. The hotel was quiet enough so got a good nights sleep. The landlady was very friendly with no heirs and graces. I would say the hotel is just in need of updating and a bit of TLC. We could have had breakfast at additional charge but we decided to walk to a cafe on the main street which was fine.
