“Best place to stay in Decorah”

My wife and I recently spent two nights at the Hotel Winneshiek and loved it. The staff was friendly - particularly the woman serving the breakfast. There are cheaper alternatives on the South side of town but if you want to leave the front door of your hotel to stroll down Water Street then you can not beat this location. You are within a short walk to Mabe's, Ruby's (the new home of Ronnie's Rolls), and several new spots that have opened since my last visit. Downtown Decorah is bordering on trendy in spots but there are also the old favorites so you have many options. Back to the hotel, the bed was extremely comfortable and the room and the entire building are beautifully decorated. You have the turn of the century charm of the renovated building combined with the usual modern conveniences. We will be back.

“expected more for this price and the character of the hotel”

My wife and I stayed two nights in the fall of '10. The hotel itself is quite incredible and beautiful. Our room however was quite small. And from when I first came in contact with the hotel, a few weeks earlier, I was taken aback by how distant and unfriendly the front desk staff was. The continued to our actual stay with several front desk employees. It was like they hadn't been trained to warmly greet guests as they could have. The restaurant breakfast was very low key and a disappointment to the rest of the hotel's quality. The location was excellent. I would have expected superior staff demeanor for this price in a small town.
