“Clean, well-located hotel with friendly staff.”

This was our second stay at the Grand Godwin and we will stay there again. We like the location as it is a short auto-rickshaw ride from the New Delhi Railway Station and Connaught Place. Paharganj, where the hotel is situated, is a bustling crowded market area with a huge choice of mid-level and cheap restaurants aimed at local as well as foreign tourists. Despite appearances, it is as safe as anywhere in Delhi. The complimentary breakfast on the rooftop restaurant is adequate. We had an early morning flight and really appreciated the 5 AM breakfast that they served in our room at no extra cost. The staff is unobtrusive but politely available when you need them. The reception team is very helpful.

“Very friendly hotel”

We stayed at the Godwin for 4 nights whilst recently in Delhi. The hotel is a good comfortable mid range hotel. All the staff were incredibly friendly from the complimentary pick up from the airport, to arranging transport and tours. The location of the hotel is right near the railway station and Connaught Place. I really enjoyed my stay at the Godwin.

“A safe bet.”

In the end, they were very helpful and professional. The rooms are definitely at a higher standard than other hotels in the area, although the Godwin is now more expensive as a result. It's probably worth it. The staff were obliging with rearranging one of our bookings and we twice received free room upgrades, which was unexpected and nice. Overall, this place is a safe bet if you want the centrality of Paharganj and the associated proximity to New Delhi station.

“When I go back to Delhi I will probably stay there”

We ordered a deluxe room with a taxi to pick us up from the airport. There was a confusion and the driver picked someone else up, but there was a representative from the hotel there to sort things up. When we got to the hotel the reception was very nice, and we got an upgrade for our room. The room vas very nice and clean, the shower was amazing with water comming from 6 directions. The balcony upstairs is a very nice place to sit in the evening. Whenever we needed something the recption was very pleasant. The hotel is a 15 minute walk from the main bazaar, though it isn't a very pleasant walk

“recommend”

For the price this is an excellent value. The breakfast could be improved in taste and the care of the room - insuring the room had fresh towels and soap could aka be improved. But charm and overall quality for this cost it is well worth it.

In general the people are nice and like to help. The food is tasty. I had small problem with hot water in the first day, but they solve it.

“Not for the faint hearted!”

The pre check in communication was excellent and the hotel arranged a complemetary airport pick up. The staff were friendly and helpful especially the travel desk who made us some good value for money offers for tours which sadly we could not take up due to existing commitments. The location looks daunting although we discovered that the street outside is quite lively and safe. On the down side the hotel was down at heel and dirty, especially the bathroom which also had loose tap fittings which meant they could not be turned off. The restaurant is appalling. Dirty and grubby with miserable service. the television blasted out Indian programmes 24/7 which was obviously for the benefit of the staff. However, the sister hotel next door was just the opposite, so it was handy to pop in there for a night cap. There is a good wifi connection here which is unusual for India. For first time travellers I would suggest that this is not the place for you - its hard arriving in India and the location and surliness does not help. However for the budget traveller it is just about vfm for a one night stay.

“Only for a very low price =(”

I didn't pay much for my stay, so I would say I got what I should have expected. The room was very basic and shabby. This didn't concern me much. What surprised me was the location. The hotel is located centrally as stated in the description; however, the area is crowded, dirty, and smelly. You are 5 minutes away from New Delhi Station, but those 5 minutes are horribly unpleasant. I wasn't happy with the staff as well. Room service people were scarily intense (part of being single female traveler in India, I guess). The manager was not accommodating when I asked about trips outside of Delhi. He was not helpful and honest about my traveling options. I ended up paying for the 3-days trip to Jaipur, and I would not recommend it to anyone. I've payed too much for a pushy driver and an arrogant guide.

“What is the Lonely Planet Thinking???”

Didn't enjoy our room at all. The hotel seems nice enough from the outside (though on a despicable street) and has a door man but we found out he was usually asleep or late to jump from his post to actually perform his job. The room was ok in size though reeked of garbage. The shower only had hot water on occasions and the staff was less than helpful, especially in the restaurant. The food was often served on dirty plates and contained a usual hair. The staff was less than excited to be there, daydreaming or watching TV, but hung around towards payment time in hopes of a tip. We used the "tour desk" service to take a ride to the Taj when and were steeply lied to about the cost to take the train on our own. Upon checking out the front desk man claimed we owed unpaid money on their internet --information that is kept in hand written books. We informed him that we paid all of our internet charges up front he didn't believe us and became upset when I asked for the manager, vaguely pointing to a man across the lobby. I had to then ask the front desk to actually summon the manager who came over, who was upset to take the charge off the bill (approx. $2 USD). After claiming to take off the charge he handed us a receipt which still showed the charge. We went round and round again and finally demanded a copy with the charges stating that we didn't owe any $. Stating it nicely--it was a horrible experience and I can't imagine why The Lonely Planet would endorse such a miserable place.
