They don't make 'em like this anymore!

Pros: Comfort, history and charm are strong points. And, it is next door to Raccoon River Brewery, which has great beer and really excellent food!
Cons: Short on amenities, hallways are a bit rough, ice only on a couple of floors.
Location: The area around the hotel is safe, new and interesting. Raccoon River Brewery is next door and an excellent place to eat. Others are close.
When you walk into the lobby and see all the wood and antiques, you know you are not in a chain box hotel! It's convenient to downtown, quiet and very comfortable. This is an old hotel with lots of history, but is in great shape and a fun experience.

Wait for promised renovation next yr.

Posted Aug 17, 2014
Pros: Hotel front desk staff were very helpful, was quiet , pillows were excellent, close to downtown & there was a convenient shuttle service as well.
Cons: A lot! Rooms and hallways renovation badly needed. Bathtub. toilets blackout curtains, plug ins, & roomdoor were the worst.
Location: State fair - Botanical Garden - Good restaurants - cultural things to see - State Capital
We came to see the state Fair. Also saw the Statuary park and the Botanical Gardens. Our Hotel had a nice lobby and there was one person at the front desk that was a diamond in an otherwise disappointing room experience. We did ask for a refrigerator and a microwave which were provided. They also provided a wonderful shuttle whenever we requested it. Both Nice! We loved the pillows (just right) There was a very nice desk chair as well. Otherwise the rest was in BAD need of a complete redo. The bath was ancient , narrow, chipped. uncomfortable, and somewhat dangerous to use for older people. The toilet and the bath were slow to drain or flush. The blackout curtains were torn and hard to use. It is a Historic building and on the register and there is red tape when changes are wanted, but this Hotel definitely needs them. I would not go there again until it was completely renovated.

Not Nice

Posted Aug 8, 2014
I was disappointed in the service and the room. It had dirt on ledges, a cracked sink, one of the cabinets had peeling paint and carpet was stained in many places. I waited 5 minutes to check in as the front desk person was on the phone taking a reservation.

Nice downtown location

Overall, it was a nice and quiet stay. The hotel is pretty old and the pictures of the inside don't exactly reflect that. Rooms were smaller than anticipated and really need updated.

Location: Very convenient location in downtown Des Moines. It was close to the Farmer's Market area so it was an easy walk to enjoy the Saturday morning market
Room was average; hotel staff was awesome. It was a safe location and lots of eating places close by. Good for the cost of the room.
