    Pocket Guide: Arkansas

Arkansas is famous for two things: Bill Clinton and hot springs. Bill Clinton these days lives in New York, but you can explore plenty of hot springs when you visit the Natural State.

In 1541, when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto first stumbled upon the area now known as Arkansas's Hot Springs National Park, he called it the "Valley of the Vapors." Today, Hot Springs National Park is one of Arkansas's most popular vacation destinations, attracting 400,000 visitors every year. The adjacent city of Hot Springs features good restaurants, fine Arkansas hotels and thoroughbred racing from January through April at the Oaklawn Park track.

Besides its famous hot springs, Arkansas features several other unusual recreational opportunities. Crater of Diamonds State Park is the only diamond mine in the world that's open to the public. Visitors use archaic bottom-screener equipment to search for diamonds. They get to keep whatever diamonds they discover regardless of size.

When diamonds were first found here in 1906, it created such a boom that hotels in Arkansas in the southwestern part of the state turned away 10,000 people in just a couple of months because they ran out of rooms! You may not want to turn the stones you unearth into an engagement ring, but panning for diamonds is a terrifically entertaining way to spend an afternoon.

The heart of Arkansas is the Ozark Mountains, the broad geological highlands that cover the southern and northwestern part of the state. Visitors enjoy fabulous outdoor recreational opportunities in the Ozark national Forest with its extensive network of hiking trails and waterways for swimming, fishing and canoeing.

Bill Clinton's Presidential Center & Library is located in the River Market district of Little Rock. Twenty years ago, River Market mostly consisted of abandoned warehouses. The city stepped in, renovated these structures, and built and amphitheater and a riverside park. Today, River Market with its many upscale restaurants, galleries, shops and other businesses is the center of a revitalized state capital. Little Rock is the best place to find a cheap Arkansas hotel deal.

It can be difficult to uncover Arkansas hotel deals since the state is still struggling to define itself as a tourism destination. Expedia can help you track down top Arkansas hotel packages by giving you access to an online database that includes other users' experiences. Find cheap hotel deals in Arkansas with the amenities you need at the prices you want, and then book reservations at special discount rates.

    "Beautiful hotel"
It was freezing when we got there, but we were greeted with a beautiful and lit fireplace in the lobby. It was so welcome after a long drive. The staff was friendly and helpful. When we got to the room, it was amazingly clean and well-decorated. The furniture was a little outdated, but it still looked really nice, and there was an amazing amount of space. Our playpen fit with plenty of room to spare. The bathroom was stocked with Bath & Body Works, which was a nice touch. I'd read many reviews about a horrible smell. I didn't experience that at all. It smelled like air freshener. We ran into the problem of not having hot water when we woke up, but it was fixed within minutes. We tried out the steakhouse on site, and the food was delicious. It was a little pricey, but we didn't expect a cheap steakhouse, and it was worth the price. I only have two minor complaints. The first is that there's no microwave in the room. Minor, but it was a bummer. The second is that the air in the room was very dry. I seemingly couldn't touch anything without shocking myself, and my nose was burning before the end of the night. Next time, and there DEFINITELY will be a next time, we know to bring a humidifier. This is our new go-to hotel in Little Rock.

    "Good Value for the Money"
Simmons Suites in Bentonville, Arkansas provided exceptional value for the money. Our room was very clean, with two queen beds, had a kitchen with full-sized refrigerator and sink. Glasses, utensils and plates were provided in the drawers and cupboards. The large, spacious bathroom had a modern shower and nice toiletries. Beds were exceptionally comfortable and had very clean sheets. All electronic devices in the room were functional. There is an indoor pool with adjacent hot tub, exercise room and lounge (which serves alcoholic beverages) on site, all with regular and convenient hours. The staff were courteous, attentive and well-versed in local restaurants and attractions. The close proximity to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art was a major plus, as the museum is only 10 minutes from the hotel. The River Grille restaurant, located two minutes from the hotel, was an enjoyable dining experience (although expensive for a family). I would recommend this hotel for both overnight and extended stays. Great experience.
