    Pocket Guide: Connecticut

Connecticut packs a surprising amount of bang for the tourist buck into a relatively small geographical area. The state is dominated by proximity to waterways. Long Island Sound lies along Connecticut's southern coast, and the Housatonic, Naugatuck, Quinnipiac, Connecticut and Thames rivers slice through its level plains.

These rivers and their tributaries provided hydroelectric power for the myriad mills that dominated Connecticut's economy through the 19th century. Many of these industrial structures have been renovated within the last 15 years to create galleries, retail shops, restaurants, Connecticut hotels and even living spaces, making formerly gritty industrial towns charming spots for idling away an afternoon.

The city of Bridgeport on the Sound has beaches, parks and other attractions including a museum devoted to the life of the famous impresario P.T. Barnum and zoological gardens where a Shakespeare in the Park production is put on every summer. The lighthouses near Bridgeport County are famous. Leave your car behind and take the Trolley Lighthouse Tour to see Baileys Harbor Lighthouse, Cana Island Lighthouse and other historic harbor sights. In these parts of Connecticut, close to New York, finding a cheap Connecticut hotel deal on the spot can be tough. Visitors are advised to book reservations before their trip.

Farther north along the coast, the village of Mystic features an excellent living history museum called Mystic Seaport that offers a glimpse of what life in a 19th century fishing village must have been like.

In autumn, Litchfield Hills along Connecticut's shared border with Massachusetts blaze with the scarlet and gold colors of the changing fall foliage. This area contains Connecticut's densest concentration of colonial buildings. Many historians consider the village of Litchfield itself to be the best-preserved colonial town in America. Litchfield's village commons and principal streets have been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1959. Hotels in Connecticut here fill up fast.

New Haven is not only the location of world famous Yale University, but it also has the distinction of being the first city in the U.S. designed by urban planners. The city is known for its numerous ethnic restaurants that cater to the international student body.

"Convenient halfway point on a trip"
I usually stayed at another hotel chain when I travel through Hartford, but it was booked, so I decided to try the Hilton. I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was friendly, I could walk to meet friends, the rate was competitive. I had the fresh fruit at breakfast, and it was a huge plate of ripe fruit.

    "Really nice hotel"
We needed a hotel for one night for a lacrosse tournament my son was in. We got a good rate so we chose the Courtyard Marriott. Front desk was extremely friendly and helpful with directions to the field and listing of restaurants nearby. Room was very clean. I would definitely stay here again.

    "Top Notch!"
Needing a location close to Yale-New Haven Hospital we decided to give the New Haven Hotel a chance. We have often stayed in New Haven but in another hotel that is much more costly. The New Haven was a pleasant surprise! Some of the friendliest and most helpful staff I have ever encountered. Nicely refurbished property in every way. Beautiful room with comfortable beds. THE most outstanding electrical/digital setup at the desk I've ever seen! Only negative: beautiful sink area in bath was higher than normal and not real ergonomic or comfortable. Very strange! Overall - highly recommended.

    "Modern, Comfortable Hotel"
After having a disappointing experience with a hotel in the same price range the night before, this hotel was a breath of fresh air! The staff was welcoming. They gave me dinner recommendations and told me about the hotel shuttle right away. The king-sized bed was so comfortable! I just wanted to stay in the comforter forever. The bathroom had a big shower with glass doors and the hair dryer was a real hair dryer and not one of those awful wall units a lot of hotels have. The shampoo/conditioner worked really well. There was a good selection of movies to watch for free. Certain walls in the room were thin. I could here a few things from the bathroom next door and I could hear the elevator across the hall. There was no noise from the street however and I couldn't hear anything from the bedroom next door. Breakfast was simple, but good. I had eggs, sausage, home fries, a fruit cup, and orange juice. They also had cereal, pastries, etc. They only had Lipton and a couple other teas, but since I'm a tea snob I carry my own loose leaf.
