    Pocket Guide: Japan

Japanese culture is a fusion of East and West. Though skyscrapers, gigantic animated billboard,s and high-speed transportation systems dominate Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, the cities are still places where the austere beauty of a traditional Japanese sculpture garden is also revered. There are plenty of chain hotels in Japan, but you will see many other lodging options too, such as the traditional guesthouses called ryokans.

Tokyo's Ghibli Museum is an homage to anime, showcasing the work of one of Japan's top anime film studios. The Roppongi Art Triangle houses the Mori Museum, the Suntory Museum, and the National Art Center of Tokyo. While the Meiji-jingu Shrine, the largest Shinto shrine in Japan, is dedicated to the spirit of the early 20th-century Japanese emperor who presided over Japan's transition from feudal backwater to world power. While there are plenty of Japan hotel packages in Tokyo, language differences can make locating rooms difficult. Many travelers prefer to book reservations for a cheap Japan hotel deal before they leave home so that they can take advantage of discount rates.

Travel to Kyoto, Japan's ancient imperial capital, on the Shinkansen bullet train, Asia's fastest high-speed rail. There are 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kyoto, including the Kamigamo Shrine built in A.D. 678 on the shores of the Kamo River and the Nijo Castle, the donjon of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

The Kyoto Imperial Palace, home to Japan's royal family for five centuries, is worth seeing too, and tours are free. The gardens surrounding the Palace, designed by the most famous landscape architect in Japanese history, are widely considered Japan's most beautiful gardens. Kyoto is also famous for its handicrafts and for being one of the best places to shop for textiles, pottery, fans, and curios to bring back home as gifts. A number of Japan hotel deals can be had here too.

If you are interested in samurais, Matsumoto Castle features a superb collection of 16th-century samurai armor, the oldest extant kept in Japan, and a special chamber built in 1635 that was specially designed for viewing the moon. The Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa took 150 years to build, and it is one of the largest gardens in Japan, featuring knolls, trees, streams, ponds, and footpaths.

Japan hotels are very comfortable, but Western tourists should expect a set of amenities that are different from what they are used to. The Japanese, for example, prefer to sleep on hard pillows. These cultural differences are listed on Expedia so that you find cheap hotel deals in Japan that offer your preferred amenities at reasonable prices.

"A good business hotel in middle of Ginza."
Hotel Gracery (pronounced Gracely) is a very clean and convenient business hotel in the middle of Ginza. It is clean, new and the service by the hotel staff is great. Rooms are small compared to the bigger named hotels in Tokyo.

"Very convenient hotel at the edge of Shinjuku"
You can't go wrong with this hotel, its very nice, always spotlessly clean. My room was spacious with a nice soft bed and excellent double-sided pillows, one side firm 'beads' which seems common in japan, and the other side soft which was very comfortable for me, and I like my pillows quite soft. Bathroom and hallway efficiently laid out. The vending machine room on each floor was very handy, and there was a family mart just across the street as well. Also very handy for international travellers like myself was the citibank ATM literally next door to the hotel. I really enjoyed not being quite in the 'middle' of Shinjuku so it was a bit less busy, but a few minutes walk and you were right in the excitement. For catching trains it was perfect because I could use the much less busy Yoyogi station if I was using the Yamanote line (which I often was) as it felt about the same distance as Shinjuku station. I also enjoyed the many restaurants at the nearby Takeshimaya building, which you could easily walk to from just across the road from Sunroute hotel. Really, I just felt close to everything, which was ideal for me.

    "Great location near Shinjuku station"
We stayed here on the recommendation of a Japanese friend. This is a wonderful hotel. The location is wonderful. So close to the train station, shopping, dining, and the beautiful Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Our room had a view of this park and was a very relaxing sight. I felt it was a wonderful stay, we stayed for 6 nights and felt so comfortable. I don't speak any Japanese but the staff was able to help us with any questions. I will stay here again when I return to Tokyo.

    "Excellent, charming hotel"
We had a wonderful stay in this hotel. Helpful and polite staff. Clean rooms and comfortable triple beds. A charming hotel with its own chapel, very popular for weddings. We are very glad for the underground passage that connects to Osaka Station. Especially important in winter as we were sheltered from the rain and cold. Getting to the airport was a breeze. From the basement of the hotel, enter basement A11 of Osaka Garden City. From there, walk straight to exit 71 (Herbis Osaka), take the lift up and you are at the Airport Limousine Bus which takes you to Kansai International Airport. We had so many luggages when we left at 6am but we need not use any staircase or steps to get to the Limousine Bus. Just a short, smooth walk from the hotel. No need for taxis.

We stayed here for our honeymoon. Everything about this hotel is perfect. From the location, service, room service, rooms, everything. We even recieved a bottle of wine and chocolates for our honey moon with a personal note. This hotel made our stay in kyoto so good. Very modern rooms and great feel about the entire place.

"Nice Hotel Close to Kyoto Subway Station"
I have had the pleasure to stay in this nice hotel situated within 10 minutes walk from the Karasuma Oike Kyoto subway station. It is also located within walking distance of 20 minutes to one of Kyoto's shopping district located in Shijo. The hotel staffs were able to converse in simple English and were friendly and helpful too. The international buffet breakfast served by the hotel was within my expectation. The variety was not fantastically a lot but it was enough to fill up my stomach for a good start of the day. The room is not too small and there was sufficient walking space to navigate around the room even after placing 2 big luggages in the room. The room is well equipped with hair dryer, electric kettle and a mini fridge.

    "Beautiful hotel"
The hotel itself has a really pretty interior. The room we got had the biggest bed! For the price, I was not complaining. It's the best hotel I've been in my whole trip, definitely will stay here again if I decide to come back to Kyoto. Cons are the staff wasn't very helpful and I don't know if the massage at their spa was worth the amount it was. But overall, close to the market!
