    Pocket Guide: Nevada

Forty million people can't be wrong. That's how many tourists visit Las Vegas, Nevada every year. They come for the casinos, the nightlife, and the Elvis impersonators. They stay for incredible restaurants where top chefs, like Joel Robuchon and Thomas Keller, perform culinary magic every night, for the shopping at fabulous malls and discount outlets, for the eye-catching casino and resort architecture, and for the Nevada hotel deals.

The allure of Las Vegas is so overpowering, many people overlook the fact that Nevada has lots of other vacation attractions. Don't make this mistake yourself! You won't have problems locating Nevada hotels in major population centres like Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe, but if the desert moonscape beckons you, it's advisable to book a cheap Nevada hotel deal in advance.

Straddling the Nevada and California border, Lake Tahoe and its outlet, the Truckee, are perfect places for water sports of every kind. Water ski, paddleboard, and kayak on the lake, or spend a lazy afternoon floating down the river in an inner tube. Explore the beautiful surrounding countryside by mountain bike or on horseback. In the winter, Lake Tahoe is one of the nation's most popular destinations for snow holidays with 15 ski resorts all within easy driving distance of one another.

Want to learn more about Nevada's mining past? Visit Virginia City just north of Tahoe. Thanks to the Comstock silver lode, Virginia City was the wealthiest town in the U.S. for one brief shining moment back in 1859. Today, the silver comes out of tourists' pockets. Stop in at the Bullette Red Light Museum to get up to speed on the history of the world's oldest profession, or visit The Way It Was Museum to learn about mining.

Area 51, the spot in the southwestern Nevada desert where putative aliens landed, is off limits to civilians, but you can take Route 375, dubbed the "Extraterrestrial Highway," right past it. Stock up on alien jerky when you hit the tiny town of Rachel.

If Las Vegas is the diamond in Nevada's crown, then Reno is its glittering red ruby. Nicknamed "The Biggest Little City in the World," Reno is not ashamed to show off its western roots. When you get bored with the casinos, book a walking tour of Reno's historic districts with the Historic Reno Preservation Society.

Wherever you go in Nevada, Expedia will help you find the best Nevada hotel packages and cheap hotel deals in Nevada. Read reviews from others who've been there, and make reservations for rooms at special rates. Expedia helps you take advantage of top prices for hotels in Nevada.

    "Okay for the price"
Made a quick family trip down to Las Vegas for spring break. Found good price on Expedia but they will charge you a 'resort fee' for use of the pool and wifi - whether you want it or not. But still a good price. Room was clean, bed was comfortable. Room had fridge and safe. Pool is okay, kinda small for how many people were there. There was a DJ playing hip-hop music kinda loud, so if you're not into that, you've been warned. There is no snack bar at the pool. There are bikini-clad waitresses bringing drinks to people but they seem to spend most of their time catering to the folks who paid for a cabana. The rest of us went thirsty... There was a hot tub but it was full of drunk college guys... And it's a long walk from the elevators. Not sure why they designed it that way. My biggest complaint - and it's the same for every hotel in Vegas - is that the whole place smells like an ashtray. Just walking from the garage to the elevators makes your eyes water. It would really be nice if casinos would put in some decent ventilation. And, there was cable TV with a decent selection of channels but the controls are bad - not sure what it was but you would push a button and it would take several seconds for the TV to respond. It wasn't the batteries, but it got annoying.

    "Very nice hotel"
The hotel was really nice and the room although quite small, was very nicely appointed. However, I asked for an upper floor room in a quiet location and was given a room on the second floor facing into the garbage refuse area, so we could hear things crashing and glass breaking the entire night. Be aware, if you are booked into a room in the NORTH TOWER, ask to be ABOVE the second floor. Otherwise, you will have to take an elevator to the 3rd floor, get out and walk across a skywalk, down a LONG hall to another elevator (appears to be a freight or staff elevator -- not nice!) and will take that elevator to the second floor where you will eventually find your room. If you have children travelling with you do not let them run ahead into the room. There is a tray of "goodies" on view on top of the minibar, and if something is picked-up and not put back within 45 seconds (same with the mini-bar), it is charged to your room automatically. The hotel has ample free parking but depending on the time of day you may have to search a bit for a vacant spot. The beds were comfortable but small (double's) and there were ample towels in the bathroom which appeared very clean -- the tub and shower area were actually shiny. Although we didn't use it, there is also a separate arcade room for the younger kids
