The room was well appointed, maintained to a very high standard and heated to just the right level to be comfortable without being stuffy. The evening menu provided a good selection to suite most tastes, was well cooked and attractively presented. I did however find the black decor somewhat depressing. The buffet breakfast was again a very good selection and the staff paid great attention to ensuring the hot food did not dry out when on the hot plate. The only negative comment I have is the £10 per day charge to use the car park, which I felt was excessive. Why not include in the cost of the room? To add to the irritation, to exit the car park you have to collect a credit card type of token from reception and put in the machine at the barrier. This machine is somewhat sensitive and swallowed my token but did not open the barrier. By now a queue had formed behind me of impatient drivers who now had to reverse to allow me back into the car park so I could go back into the hotel and collect another token. The machine apparently needs the token to be held in the slot until it takes it in and then opens the barrier. A note on the machine to this effect would have saved time and the angry comments from the drivers behind me.

“Flushed with this hotel”

Great location for our weekend shopping trip. We had a superior room which was very comfortable. Unfortunately the toilet flush broke during our stay which couldnt be repaired over the weekend.These things happen in any hotel. Kate on reception was really good in dealing with the problem and we were moved to an upgraded room and we were dealt with very promptly and courteously. Good spa area and we would definatly stay in the hotel again

Good value hotel - nice pool and gym, comfy, clean, quiet room and great central location just 3 or 4 mins from the cathedral. The buffet breakfast had a good choice and items from the menu such as kippers or poached eggs could also be ordered for no extra cost. Very friendly staff. Only possible minus point is that the refurbishment currently underway is really not to my taste - I found the lobby and dining room a bit garish (lots of black walls and turquoise cushions) but apart from that I couldn't fault this hotel.

The hotel is nice and very central. The breakfast was very good and the room spacious and comfortable. Only drawback, the water in the morning shower was not warm enough.

“Unsually high levels of service”

I spend a significant part of my year staying in hotels on business. This hotel has some of the best levels of thoughtful and attentive service I have experienced anywhere and most especially in the dining room at breakfast. Often a buffet enables low staffing levels and result in guests being ignored. Not so here. The quality and range of the buffet was outsanding and in retrospect worth buying at the same time as the room. Staff attitudes suggest a well thought through training programme. Although this faltered slightly at Sunday Breakfast when the hotel was full, two minor problems we expereinced were rectified quickly and well. All in all an excellent experience in a comfortable and freindly hotel.

“Superb all round hotel”

Stayed just one night on way through to Cornwall, having been to Exeter before. Great location - quiet street round the corner from the Cathedral and main centre. Service was excellent and friendly - room was nice (call me old fashioned, but I always like it when you get biscuits to go with your tea/coffee!). Pool was good - 25m - although they could do with a shower poolside to go alongside the sauna. Good breakfast in very pleasant surroundings. Would definitely recommend the Mercure.
