Still the best choice in DjiboutiPosted Oct 29, 2013
Pros: Comfortable. Clean. Great staff. If earlier reviews complaining about cleanliness, etc., were true, they seem to have been addressed.
Cons: Beach was not very well maintained. Transportation cost extreme and hidden from us.
Location: Hotel food is fine but expensive and not very exciting. Better to head into town. Recommend Melting Pot nearby, La Mer Rouge, and Cafe de Le Gare
Overall very comfortable time at Kempinski. Staff was great. Food was very good. Beds especially comfortable. It's expensive of course, but that's what you get for staying at the best (only) game in town. My only two complaints were: The Kempinski beach is not very well maintained (at least not while I was there) so all guests used the beautiful pools instead. But would be nice if the beach area was more of an attractive option. And although I expected the place to be expensive...I was not prepared to be duped over transportation costs. When we arrived at the airport, looked to see if they had a shuttle to the hotel. Called them and they said they would send a car, which they did. I made the mistake of assuming it would be free (given that rooms are so very expensive). Then we asked them to send the car again later in the day for our friends arriving on another flight. They told me the price would be about $35 US for that trip. Pretty pricy I thought given that a taxi is about $11, but worth it to have my friends met by a car. I still thought the first trip would be complimentary, but when I checked out they charger me for all of it, and not $35 per trip, $35 per person, one way, so about $140 total to bring 4 people the 15 minutes from the airport, instead of the $22 it costs in a taxi for two rides. Double or triple a taxi might have been okay, but 7 times? I was robbed.

Expensive but the only option in Djibouti CityPosted Jan 15, 2012 on Hotels.com
A comfortable hotel - the only one of its caliber in Djibouti. Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable poolside lounging opportunities. Great breakfast selection (if part of your package.) A very unusual mix of diplomats, military and NGO types stay here, not really a standard holiday hotel. Rooms are a bit small, but comfortable. There could be a bit more attention paid to some basic maintenance, but that's nothing to complain about. My stay was here was very comfortable and I would book here again. (JAN 2012 stay, Deluxe Sea View room).
