“Good hotel, great staff”

Overall we had a good experience at the Clarence. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and was kind enough to allow us to check in early after our flight arrived in Dublin at 6am. The hotel is in an excellent location in Temple Bar, and it was easy to walk to all the major attractions in Dublin. The hotel itself seemed a little more run down than I expected, and our room - while comfortable and relatively spacious for Dublin standards - had a bit of an odor from time to time. Unfortunately were weren't able to stay long enough to experience some of the other amenities (hotel, bar, etc.) that the Clarence had to offer.

“Lovely but Loud”

This hotel was great, although not spectacular. The only drawback to being in the heart of Dublin's Temple Bar area is that the hotel is situated directly next to a very loud club, whose bass we heard pumping techno dj music until 2 or 3 am. If you want a peaceful night's rest, either bring earplugs or go somewhere else. The amenities and everything else in our room were great. Nice towel warmer in the bathroom. The staff was very friendly and helpful in giving us directions all over the city and restaurant recommendations. And they let us leave our bags at the hotel the day we checked out for a while so we could go out and have lunch before we left the city. Very nice folks there.

Area recommendations
I would recommend hanging out in Temple Bar and the Camden area of downtown Dublin. THere are so many restaurants, cafes and pubs on every corner, and lilve music spilling out of almost every other bar. It is a beautiful part of town with cobblestone streets, with the convenience a big city has to offer (ie late night quick shops, grocery, pharmacy, etc.) The facades of the buildings haven't been altered much since the last primary building boom in the Victorian era, which leaves picturesque winding streetscapes with brightly colored hand-painted business signs popping up along the road, every which way you go. Also lots of shopping on either side of the liffey.
When to go
We went in October, just after the technical "tourist season" ended. I think it was a lovely time to go. There were beautiful fall colors and changing leaves int eh middle of the island and out towards the north, and in the south in Kerry on the west side of the Island, everything was beautifully green green green...The purple heather that blankets the foothills of the Twelve Bens mountain range turns bright orange in the fall giving a really spectacular show against the subdued colors of the bogs and the mountains.
Getting around
Be prepared to walk a lot in EVERY Irish city. So pack comfortable shoes! (We went in October when there were less tourists, which was great, but it was pretty chilly. We were able to pack really comfy boots that were also stylish.) Think about it this way though, it's working off all of that Guinness. We also rented a car and drove around the island. If we had it to do over again, I would have not driven in Dublin. I would have taken a taxi back to the airport and rented the car when we were prepared to leave the city. It just sat at the hotel anyway. It was really really hairy driving in Dublin. The street signs are next to impossible to find, let alone read. Plus, you're driving on the wrong side of the road. and there are a ton of one-way streets, but if you miss the sign, you can't just discern this for yourself because the cars all park either which way on the streets, and there aren't signs telling you WRONG WAY. It was a little scary. Driving from the rental car pickup adjacent to the airport and out of town would have been spectacularly easy, because it would just be on the motorway. Have fun!
Nightlife
Go to The Quays Pub and John Gogarty's in Temple Bar. Brilliant live Irish music!

“Enjoyed Dublin and the Clarence Hotel”

I really enjoyed my stay in Dublin and the Clarence Hotel. I expected it to be a little more luxe consdiering it is owned by Bono, but it was nice. Right on the River Liffey in the heart of Dublin in the Temple Bar area. Our room was nice, toiletires and towels were nice, but no washcloths. Our room was supposed to be a supreme double, it was very simply decorated, with what seemed to be a queen sized bed. We had no view at all, which probably helped to keep our room quiet. Temple Bar gets very loud on weeeknds. The staff was great and very helpful. We arrived late at night and were allowed to use the concierge computer to book our tours for the next day.

Area recommendations
Temple Bar, very lively. great bars, with live traditional Irish music. good food and near to theatres if interetsed in seeing a play. Would definitely recommend going to Dublin in October for their annual Theatre festival.
Must see
Malahide Castle, go on the tour with GrayLIne

“Lovely hotel”

We enjoyed staying at the Clarence. It was a great location, central to all the things we wanted to see and do in Dublin. Staff was very helpful. We had dinner and breakfast in the Tearoom restaurant and both were excellent, good service too. Don't miss the speciality cocktails in the OCtagon Bar. Never saw Bono, but it was a beautifully restored classic hotel.

“Clarence--great stay!”

Great staff, excellent City Centre location in Temple Bar (which can be noisy at night), charming European-style facilities (thoroughly modern)...would recommend to anyone.

Area recommendations
Centre City (and Temple Bar) give you the best choice of restaurants, shopping and ground transportation to outlying suburbs and communities. But Dublin is a very accessible city from any part of town, due to fantastic mass transportation and the hop-on/hop-off buses.

“A great place to stay”

We enjoyed our stay the staff was very helpful with all our needs. The only tip I can pass on. the bars in Temple Bar do get very loud till 4 am bring ear plugs if you need to keep your window open.

Area recommendations
Temple Bar part of town, it is where the action is.
Getting around
Purchas the Hop on Hop off bus pass and the Dublin Pass. They are worth every Euro.

“The Clarence is cool.”

Had a wonderful time at the Clarence. If the rest of Dublin was as fantastic as the Clarence I'd certainly be back. But once in Dublin is enough.

“The Clarence Earns Its Stars”

The accomodations are simple, elegant and divine, from the room to the restaurant to the bar to the study. The staff is warm and gracious. We're known for hospitality where I'm from; this would do a Texan proud.

Area recommendations
Skip past the airport and stay south of the river.
When to go
We heard from the locals over and over, September is the time to go. The weather was beautiful, the crowds have thinned out, and there's still plenty of daylight for sightseeing.

Temple Bar - Dublin Castle, Dublin, Ireland: This small enclave by the river was developed into Dublin’s Cultural Quarter in the 1980s, and soon became the city’s nightlife centre. Temple Bar is still devoted to eating, drinking, entertainment, and shopping. By day, it’s an arty alternative hangout; by night, groups of partying tourists make it a rowdier haunt.
