Very nice hotel. The elevator was very small but this is an old hotel. The decor suggests the time frame of when the hotel was built. Everything was really nice with the clerks doing all they could to help. I was surprised to see a tray of what appeared to be home baked chocolate chip cookies along with ice water in a reception area during the late afternoon when we checked in. Their breakfast was excellent - and they even used silver and china for breakfast which is served in a small dining room. The clerks were always helpful and polite. The room had a nice charm to it with plenty of thick towels and large bars of soap in the bath. They are within walking distance of the Durango Silverton Railroad. It is also within a few miles of Mesa Verde.

Durango's Elegant HubPosted Jul 8, 2015
General Palmer is historic but is updated for contemporary comfort. A great location for the train, shopping, and restaurants. The back porch is welcoming after a day of exploring the breathtaking landscapes of this cultural hub.

Nice hotel in townPosted Jul 7, 2015
Pros: Being in town.
Location is great. Room very clean, staff very accommodating. Elevator is quite small. The breakfast could be a little better. Hotel is very charming and would return.

lovely hotel close to everything!Posted Jun 17, 2015
Pros: Location, location, location! We had a beautiful view of the train. It provided a quaint experience reminiscent of the "old days".
Cons: Continental breakfast. It would be nice if there was fresh fruit and larger variety of hot items available.
Location: Durango Silverton train. ***Soaring Zipline experience...I highly recommend this activity. It is a quality operation well worth the $$ we spent.
We were very happy with our accomodations. We upgraded upon arrival to a room with a window and it was well worth the small fee.The queen suite room was well appointed, the bed comfortable and it was immaculately clean. It had plenty of room for two but would be a tight fit with any extra people, kids or adults. We had a wonderful view of the trains as they left and arrived at the station. We also had access to a covered veranda that we enjoyed in the evenings, but be aware there is often cinder dust on the furniture. The continental breakfast did offer a few hot items such as oatmeal, eggs & sausage but was mostly bagels/toast, cold cereal, yogurt. It did not have any fresh fruit available on the two mornings we were there. The elevator was tiny and we laughed each time we squeezed into it. We parked our vehicle in the lot behind the hotel and didn't use it again till we checked out. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants available as well as the train station in easy walking distance from the hotel.

Charming room in a beautiful hotelPosted Jun 13, 2015
What a darling room in a darling town! We were delighted by the experience from check in to check out. The room was comfortable. We appreciated the sink and counter being separate from the bathroom. The elevator was a real trip back in time. Breakfast was fantastic. The daily cookies were just an added bonus.

Luxury right next to the Durango Silverton railwayPosted Jun 7, 2015
Cons: A little more variety for breakfast
Location: Downtown, near bars, restaurants etc and close to all the action in Durango
Great old western hotel in the heart of Durango. Lovely authentic touches in the public areas of the hotel and the room itself was comfortable and stylish.

Teddy BearsPosted May 6, 2015
This hotel puts a teddy bear in every room. You don't get to keep them, but it was a charming touch which added to our stay.

Historic, Victorian gem!Posted May 3, 2015
Pros: Location, nice staff, coffee and cookies, clean comfortable beautiful room.
Cons: Eliminate the classical music in the lobby and all the stuffed bears. Remodel the front end opening it up for more people. Upgrade breakfast.
Location: Center of old town Durango! Next to historic narrow gauge train station, many great restaurants, shops, art galleries, trails, the Animas river!
Very friendly and helpful staff. Lobby is typical Victorian in decor, reflecting the historical building. Classical music in the lobby is a bit heavy. Main street entry area is divided into two separate areas, one that accommodates no one, the other side accommodates very few. The free breakfast was typical hotel breakfast fare. Coffee in the lobby and freshly baked cookies in the afternoon a real treat! Our room was lovely, clean and newly remodeled. The bed and bedding very comfortable. Downtown Durango is loud at night when people are out and about. I found myself longing for earplugs as the windows did not prevent the noise coming through the glass. An interior room without windows (Which the hotel does have) are probably not a bad thing due to the loud street noise. Overall, a fine experience. this hotel feels like a home!
