    Sheltered by a long barrier reef, the east coast of Zanzibar is known for its gently sloping shock-white beaches and coral cliffs. More sparsely populated than the west, its rural resorts lie on pristine sections of coast and range from ultra luxury to rustic retreats. Inland, rare red colobus monkeys can be seen on the trail to the coral caves of the Kiwengwa-Pongwe Forest 20 km from Stone Town.
