Strange place, don't try to get here without a car

Posted Jun 1, 2013
Pros: Isolation/quiet, view, restaurant was lovely (when open - I felt bad for them as hardly anyone was there!)
Cons: Logistics without a car; breakfast; cost; inflexible reservations
Location: Impossible without a car. Don't try.
This hotel was one of the most expensive 4-star places we stayed in, yet the worst value. Had it been AU/US$100 cheaper a night, our review would probably be more positive as our expectations would have been better-aligned. ** Positive things ** - Lovely surrounds and view. - GREAT restaurant ** Negative things ** * you should NOT attempt to walk here. Taxis are possible, but make sure you look up the number before you go. That said, it's going to get annoying and expensive. You can walk, but it's about 2km of steep road with NO FOOTPATH. Deadly at night and not safe during the day. We did it with suitcases too, because GOOGLE SHOWS THE WRONG LOCATION - it's another 1/3 on. Google also doesn't show how steep it is! * the restaurant was closed on Sunday night, again without warning beforehand. This was especially problematic given the above. The only place within walking distance was one the reception manager recommended, but it too was closed. Next door to that was the worst meal all trip! * We arrived mid-May in warm weather, yet the (very nice-looking) pool was "closed". I'm aware not everyone may want to swim in low 20 degree weather, but having a pool was a key reason I booked this place and there was no mention of seasonality. It wasn't temporarily closed either - they laughed at the idea of us swimming then. This really should be publicised. * the room was only OK - tiny, dark & next to no amenities. * breakfast was crap!

Worst hotel I have stayed at for a long time

Posted May 2, 2013
Pros: Nil
Location: Extremely good
This is supposed 4 star hotel, we came down from our room at 7:00pm expecting to have a drink and then dinner, there was nobody in sight the person behind reception said that the bar was closed and offered to get us a beer, which is not what we wanted, we then asked when dinner was served, this also was closed, we were told that they were going to be busy the following day as it was a bank holiday so they had decided to close the bar and dining room. We were not made aware of this when we checked in at 12:30. Quite honestly this is an absolute disgrace for what is purporting to be a 4 star hotel with 5 star prices. Breakfast the following morning was also of very low standard with watered down juices reconstituted ham rather than fresh, a strange collection of readymade sandwichs. We had to leave promptly to get to the airport in time so did not have time to dispute the charges, but we would most certainly have expected a substantial discount. This is a very tired hotel and should most certainly not be reccomended by Expedia, they are very lucky that they have a prime position on the hill with a spectacular view

Overall Condition

Hotel is a bit tired and came across that way. Staff was not unhelpful but seem bored. Toilet in room didn't really flush. Breakfast was indifferent. Not an overall bad stay--quiet and a great view from terrace and rooms on one side--but may be able to do better in this area.
