“A nice place to stay”
We found the Ben Doran very clean and pleasant and convenient for a guest with a car. It was on a main street going directly into the city center and parking was free. The owner and his wife and staff were very helpful and pleasant and breakfast was more than ample each morning. There is no lift but the staff helped us with our bags. Andour room on the back side of the house was extremely quiet. We had a king room with ensuite bath. A friend had a small room with shared bath on the front and was bothered by the street traffic. We would definitely go back for a short stay of two nights, but the room was too small with no drawers for putting away clothes, so we wouldn't want to be there too long and live out of suitcases. And, there was a wonderful Indian restaurant lass than a block away where we ate twice! All and all, a very pleasant stay..
“For the price, not bad.”
The hotel is a small, renovated attached town-house. Staff is fine but some rooms have only shared bathrooms. Pay attention to this when you make your reservation. It is far from city center but bus connections are right in front of the hotel.
“Friendly, Clean, Warm & Quiet - We will go back again!”
What a wonderful and warm place to stay! The rooms were nice, clean and quiet. Not to mention the great advantage of actually having a good amount of available parking for guests.
“Off the beaten track.”
In spite of being a short walk to town (1.7 miles) the Ben Doran is a comfortable guest house with a friendly staff. It is clean and well maintained. It is one of the few hotels in the area that serve a complete breakfast each morning. The only down side is that the breakfast is exactly the same items each morning, but it is very well presented and included in the price of the stay.
“Great Guest House convenient to downtown Edinburgh”
I booked the Ben Doran Guest House based on reviews and was not disappointed. Parking was free and the bus stop directly across the street. Our host, Joseph, was very pleasant and accommodating. If we go back to Edinburgh I would stay here again without hesitation. Very Pleased.
“Wonderful experience!”
We were at the Ben Doran 9 nights in March. The room was lovely, the breakfast outstanding, and the staff so very helpful! We had an en suite room, but even those who did not have that convenience had only to go a few feet from their doors to the full bath facilities. I'm not sure what title Carol might hold, but she was such a marvelous hostess ---- always cheerful and friendly, ready to do whatever she could to make our stay in Edinburgh absolutely wonderful. In addition to preparing our amazing breakfast, she seemed happy to "go the extra mile", responding to the least indication of a need: arranging tours, reserving a taxi, checking the weather report... what a gem the Ben Doran has in her! We would be very pleased to have another opportunity to "check in" at the Ben Doran, and it would be even better to bring along family or friends!
“friendly stay in Edinburgh”
The staff was warm, welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was great. Right on the bus line. The Old Bell pub is near.
“Very nice place. But some rooms don't have bathrooms”
The hotel staff was very accommodating, and the place was very clean. Also very good location as far as getting into the heart of Edinburgh. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful when we had questions about Edinburgh, or sightseeing in the Highlands. Just be warned: This isn't a modern place. The building itself is 300 years old, and it's located on a street with about 20 other B&B's. Some of the rooms share a common bathroom, and some rooms have their own bathroom. This means you may have a shared floor towel for the shower, a shared toilet, and shared toilet tissue. We didn't know that ahead of time, but still enjoyed our stay. The place is more cozy than a modern hotel (with almost none of the luxury), so if you don't like sharing personal space with strangers, then it may not be for you. We were on our honeymoon, and we really did enjoy the place. Next time we'll probably look for a more modern place, but that's just our preference.
“wonderful staff”
we had a great time Carol was absolutely outstanding, we would definately stay here again.
“Wonderful”
The staff at the Ben Doran was extremely helpful in finding various places around the city. They were always eager to help and give tips as to where to visit and the best way to get there. The food was great, it was a wonderful experience and next time I visit Edinburgh I will be staying here again.
