“Wonderful experience!”
We were at the Ben Doran 9 nights in March. The room was lovely, the breakfast outstanding, and the staff so very helpful! We had an en suite room, but even those who did not have that convenience had only to go a few feet from their doors to the full bath facilities. I'm not sure what title Carol might hold, but she was such a marvelous hostess ---- always cheerful and friendly, ready to do whatever she could to make our stay in Edinburgh absolutely wonderful. In addition to preparing our amazing breakfast, she seemed happy to "go the extra mile", responding to the least indication of a need: arranging tours, reserving a taxi, checking the weather report... what a gem the Ben Doran has in her! We would be very pleased to have another opportunity to "check in" at the Ben Doran, and it would be even better to bring along family or friends!
“Friendly, Clean, Warm & Quiet - We will go back again!”
What a wonderful and warm place to stay! The rooms were nice, clean and quiet. Not to mention the great advantage of actually having a good amount of available parking for guests.
“Lovely home away from home”
The staff at the Ben Doran couldn't be nicer or more helpful. The facility itself is easily accessible by bus or cab. I recommend it enthusiastically.
“A traveller from Wales recomends this hotel”
a very pleasant place to stay for a short break room small but very clean and comfortable a bit more selection for breakfast such as cold meats and fresh fruit the hostess was very helpful when we first arrived pointing out bus time tables and places to visit
“Very nice - would definitely stay again”
We had a room with our own bathroom (some of the rooms have shared bathrooms). It was fairly roomy and very clean. The decorating was also nice and tasteful. The breakfast was very good and had a good variety. The staff was very friendly. At first it seems away from everything, but it is a nice walk from the Royal Mile, especially after a big dinner. If you don't wish to walk there is a bus stop right across the street or you can get a taxi for 5-6 pounds. I would definitely stay there again, especially since the price was very reasonable.
“Very nice hotel”
The Ben Doran is situated on what is probably the main strip of Edinburgh Hotels and Guest Houses. This will keep the standards as high as they were when my friend & I stayed there last weekend. Clean & Comfortable with very courteous and friendly owner & staff. The bus stop right outside the Ben Doran is a real boon. The buses are very frequent, very cheap and take you right into the centre of Edinburgh. We used them exclusively for the 2 nights we stayed. The buffet breakfast was very tasty with a wide variety of items from which to choose. The only downside was the steep staircase to the top floor....but hey!...it helps to burn off those lovely breakfasts! Would stay again.
“A nice place to stay”
We found the Ben Doran very clean and pleasant and convenient for a guest with a car. It was on a main street going directly into the city center and parking was free. The owner and his wife and staff were very helpful and pleasant and breakfast was more than ample each morning. There is no lift but the staff helped us with our bags. Andour room on the back side of the house was extremely quiet. We had a king room with ensuite bath. A friend had a small room with shared bath on the front and was bothered by the street traffic. We would definitely go back for a short stay of two nights, but the room was too small with no drawers for putting away clothes, so we wouldn't want to be there too long and live out of suitcases. And, there was a wonderful Indian restaurant lass than a block away where we ate twice! All and all, a very pleasant stay..
“The Ben Doran was supreme!!”
We stayed at the Ben Doran for 5 nights during the first week of November 2006. The Ben Doran was exactly as I hoped it would be! It was elegantly furnished, ultra clean and very convenient for public transportation. The staff was always very helpful and went out of their way to please us. We could always count on a wonderful breakfast every morning. I would definitely recommend this guest house.
“A Great Find”
A lovely, clean and friendly guesthouse, just a little bit away from the tourist attractions. In a great neighbourhood with pubs and restaurants a short walk away. Although we rented a car, to go into the city centre we just hopped on one of the many and frequent buses that literally stop opposite the Ben Doran.
“A Hidden Gem”
The service was exceptional, the food was beyond compare and the quiet welcome afer a long day! The owners of the Ben Doran made the trip to Scotland worth the effort and price. Centrally located within walking distance of Edinburgh and Craigmiller Castles,(~ 2.5 miles from each) and Holyrood Palace (~ 1.5 miles if you the path through Holyrood Park, though the path is steep), with a bus stop right across the street for those who don't want to walk, the Ben Doran is ideally located. The condition of the room, flexibility of the staff, exquisite service and food, the Ben Doran truley offers the best of Edinburgh - I would go back to Edinburgh just to stay in the Ben Doran!
