Perfect location

Excellent location for Royal mile and new town. Good restaurant and bar but beware short measures for cocktails in bar - too much ice. Breakfast was fantastic , room very clean, warm and bed was comfortable.

Great location.

Posted Mar 16, 2015
Pros: Location
Cons: A bit crammed in the room. More stock of tea, coffee and milk would have been nice rather than having to keep going to reception to get this.
Location: Location is great near centre of town with lots of resturants, pubs, shops and entertainment.
Great location although the room was smaller than expected. Staff were very polite and well mannered and the breakfast choices was good.

Return to Edinburgh

Posted Mar 12, 2015
On a whim, nearly 40 years after my last visit & the first time for my partner, we decided on a few days break in Edinburgh.A bit of discount through work perks scheme led us to The George. Very comfortable, great base for exploring. Kilted door staff was a surprise. Can't comment on the food as we ate out, but the room itself was fine. Hotel within a few minutes walking distance of Waverley Station. We'll be going back.

Lovely hotel, friendly staff, but noisy

Posted Mar 10, 2015
Pros: Location, staff, bed, breakfast.
Cons: They should think about installing double glass window to keep the noise out. Also the chef needs to work on the poached eggs.
Pros: the location is spot on, in the middle of the city centre, so it's perfect if you like to walk everywhere. The staff is friendly, and always ready to help. The bed was very comfortable, probably the best about the room, and the tea & coffee facilities were a welcome touch. Breakfast was brilliant, very good croissants, fresh fruit and pancakes, only bad thing was the poached egg which tasted of vinegar, but it was a minor detail. Cons: maybe we had bad luck with our room (123), but it was very noisy all through the night. A bar downstairs kept throwing glass bottles on the bin every half hour, and more than a few drunk guests decided the best spot to have a loud conversation was in front or our room door. We were so tired from walking all day that we still managed to get a good sleep, but if you are a light sleeper, be careful. All in all, I definitely recommend the hotel.

Great hotel in a fantastic old building

Posted Mar 3, 2015
Pros: Location is superb, close to Princess Street and a tram stop at St Andrews Square. Comfortable and warm hotel with friendly staff.
Cons: Hard to find fault with anything.
Location: Located on street back from Princess Street. Even though there are a number of bars and restaurants in George St we had no noise issues.
Reception is usually your first encounter with hotel staff and on arrival we were meet with a warm smile which was a good start. Luckily, our engagement with every member of staff turned out to be exactly the same. We didn't encounter any staff member who wasn't friendly and polite with us and we actually felt like they wanted us there. The hotel is in a great location, one block back from Princess Street. There is a tram stop at the end of the street and across St Andrews Square. If you arrive by tram, the distance from the tram stop is an easy 4 minute walk on flat ground. There is a bar attached to the hotel that was very busy on Friday evening - this shows how popular it is. The same area is where the breakfast is served. Breakfast had good quality food at what I would say was about an average hotel price for a cooked breakfast. I enjoyed it! From a location and friendliness perspective you can't go wrong with this hotel. I would be very happy to stay here again.

Not as good as it should be

Posted Mar 3, 2015
Pros: location
Cons: bathrooms, attention to detail
Location: loads
its a great location but not cheap and for the price you expect better bathrooms and a few little touches such as complimentary water in the room would help I can only recommend it for the location there are better hotels in Edinburgh where they are more focussed on the little things that always make a stay better

City break perfection

Posted Mar 2, 2015
The George is an excellent hotel in a prime location directly opposite The Dome and the Hard Rock Café within walking distance to bars and clubs and the castle but tucked away enough not to get disturbed by night owls. The hotel itself was lovely and my only gripe is that the upstairs decor could be updated colour wise. Staff were excellent. Breakfast was quality too. I would definitely stay again.
