“Slightly rundown but amazing staff”
The hotel is a little rundown and the front rooms are noisy as heck but the staff is REALLY amazing and kind. The breakfast staff was so friendly that they made you feel like home. Even with the general confusion I encountered upon check-in, the staff easily made up for it. The shower is an interesting experience with a digital heating system that's either colder than death or the temperature of the sun. Breakfast is nice. Would return but would try to get a quieter room.
“Friendly, quiet and a stones throw from everything”
I've read other reviews on the net about this hotel. Some of them have been unnecessarily negative. I've heard complaints of there being no hairdryer in the room (read the welcome book in your hotel room, it says all you need to do is ask for one), that there was no toiletries (again, if you ask the extremely friendly and helpful staff they'll pass you the missing toiletries along with a sincere apology), and that the building is old. You are in Edinburgh, a historical city, alot of the buildings are old! Here's my personal experience: Warmly greeted by the staff, who went out of their way to point out good places to eat etc (besides the exceptional Thai restaurant within the hotel) and how best to get around the city. The bedroom was HUGE. There was 2 extra beds in there. Granted the bathroom was a little small, but for the price I was paying and given I only use a hotel as base camp anyway, I couldn't complain given it's a 5 minute walk to the hustle and bustle from the hotel which is in a quiet part of the city. Some days there is cooked breakfasts, other days there aren't - however this isn't a complaint, the continental breakfasts are vast. Lots of choice, lots of food. There was a fridge in the hotel room - something alot of hotels charge extra for, excellent for chilling bottles of water for the hike up Arthur's Seat. Free broadband - again something other hotels like to charge for. I'd go back again. Cheap, friendly and honest.
“Good value, great breakfast and restaurant.”
I think the quality of decor in this hotel varies from room to room (i caught a glimpse of a neighbour's room and it looked more modern) but our room was clean, light and airy. The bathroom was small but clean and smelt fresh. The decor was dated but perfectly acceptable. It's a 15 minute walk to the main shopping streets. The hotel had free (very quick) broadband in the lobby which was always available. The breakfast was included in the price and included a full continental breakfast with extras like nutri grain bars and dried and fresh fruit. The Thai restaurant attached to the hotel was very reasonable as you get 10% off if you are staying in the hotel and the food was amazing, just what we needed after walking around all day. Top tip: take your own towels (theirs are a bit small and crispy) Very good value for money, would use again.
“Dissapointing”
The room was quite dusty and generally very unpleasant..Bed was almost falling apart, but at least linen was clean. Shower was ok, but not exactly clean either as I could see soap mark all over the place.. even toilet paper roll was very tiny.. In the morning as I had to leave quite early around 7.30am I couldn't get any breakfast - there were nobody around and it was clear they do not serve breakfast until after 8am!!! I wouldn't recommend this place.. Better pay slightly more and hopefully get a better room!
