Emmarentia Dam Tours

Choose one or more items to build your trip:
Visit a popular scenic spot in the city for leisurely walks, picnics, live music events, watersports and wildlife.

Go walking, sailing and wildlife spotting or simply relax at Emmarentia Dam. The picturesque parkland borders Johannesburg Botanical Garden and encompasses lawns, woodlands and a large body of water.

Stroll, jog or cycle along the paved trails and venture into the woods for some bird spotting. Grab your camera and binoculars and see if you can spot weavers, moorhens and other colorful species. The botanical garden is home to many bird species and you may see some of them in the dam area.

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to go kayaking, windsurfing and sailing across the dam. Rent equipment from the clubs located on its eastern side. Sailing and canoeing classes are also available. Cast a line and fish for carp and bass, among other species. A fishing permit is required and is obtainable from any post office.

Bring some bats and balls with you to play outdoor sports on the grassy areas. Then roll out your picnic basket for an alfresco feast.

Emmarentia Dam is also a venue for cultural activities and concerts by local and international musicians. Among the previous top acts to have performed here is popular British reggae band UB40. Other events include the Holi One Color Festival, a one-day celebration of togetherness with lots of music and partying. Visit the festival’s official website for full details.

Take advantage of the dam’s location to visit the adjoining Johannesburg Botanical Garden. Walk among the trees, the rose garden and many other floral displays and rest by ornamental ponds and the fountain.

Located in the northern suburb of Greenside, Emmarentia Dam is a 15-minute drive from downtown Johannesburg and is well served by public transport. Drivers can make use of the free onsite parking facilities. The dam and botanical gardens are open daily, from sunrise to sunset and admission is free.
