Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is located roughly 45 miles (72 kilometers) to the southwest of Emmeloord, while Haarlem is 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the southwest.
While it may be tempting to just kick back and relax when holidaying in Emmeloord, remember, the Netherlands' abundance of natural sights, cities and towns are never more than a day trip away. While you are staying in Emmeloord, experience Enkhuizen. Approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the west, this regional city is where you'll find Zuiderkerk, Westerkerk and Buitenmuseum. Flessenscheepjesmuseum, Drommedaris and Enkhuizen Stadhuis are some other places worth investigating for those who have time to spare.
The area around Emmeloord is known for its fine war relics and monuments; these are wonderful testaments to the area's colorful history. If you're looking for indoor entertainment, you really can't go past the Netherlands' excellent history museums, theaters and art galleries. These are great spots to learn about the local lore and culture and perhaps pick up an unusual souvenir.
If you're the kind of traveler who likes to take things easy while on vacation, this region is great for cycling and camping. Water-based sports are a common pastime here. Take the opportunity to go wind surfing or boating; this area has some perfect spots.
