Emmen is situated approximately 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of the national capital Amsterdam, and 100 miles (161 kilometers) east of Haarlem.
Make sure you leave a little time to visit Dierenpark Emmen or Emmerdennen Hunebed while you are here.
Emmen isn't the only spot in this popular region worth seeing; visitors should also take a day trip or two to experience the special qualities of the surrounding scenery, cities and towns. You may also wish to check out Hardenberg, 19 miles (31 kilometers) to the northeast, and Anloo 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the southeast.
About 35 miles (56 kilometers) to the northwest of Emmen is Groningen, a regional center which is home to Universiteitsmuseum, Grafisch Museum and Grote Markt. Dutch Comics Museum, Groninger Museum and University of Groningen are also good places to visit.
Many people who explore the Netherlands usually take time to explore the farms, open-air markets and lighthouses dotted throughout the region. To understand a region, it helps to peer back through the mists of time. The Netherlands' evocative historic bridges are a great place to start.
When you hear the call of the wild, follow the lead of local thrill seekers and spend the day hiking and horse riding. If the weather is fine while here, discover the Netherlands' watery side. Swimming and fishing are just two of the well-established watersports here.
And at the end of your vacation, pack up your gear and bid Emmen a fond Dag (farewell).
