This hotel is opposite the boardwalk on Roxas Bvd about 1km from the main Ermita shops. I don't think it is in the general "touristy" areas and would not have stayed in Ermita/Malate had I not had business to do there. I felt safe within the hotel and the staff certainly knew how to look after me. Even with the wild weather that occurred while I was there (Typhoon Luis and Tropical Storm Mario), they made sure that all was okay with me.
Although during my stay there was a number of building works nearby (and especially next door), I did not hear or feel any disruptions. The only downside to my whole stay was when part of the building next door was being demolished and they knocked out the entire telecommunications for the G Hotel. That meant there was no phone lines into or out of the hotel nor wifi. This was by NO means any fault of the hotel and the staff were exceptional in their helpfulness when I needed outside lines to make critical phone calls (one staff member even allowed me to use their own personal mobile phone to make the calls).
Overall, although I didn't go out at night, the G Hotel is close enough to restaurants and clubs for people to enjoy the nightlife in Ermita/Malate. The Manila Zoo is just a walk away (even though I didn't have the opportunity to go) and a quick taxi ride will take you anywhere you need if you choose not to walk. The hotel facilities were great and the staff couldn't be more helpful or friendly.
