“Only game in town.”
Okay, you've decided to take the train to the Grand Canyon - good choice. Unfortunately, the only decent and convenient hotel (motel, really) is this one. The other motels in town are kind of seedy, and you have to wrestle your luggage to and from the rail platform. The Grand is overpriced for what it is, and the beds are not that comfortable. It is a large motel and you could be a long, long way from the lobby with no bellman on staff. However, they do gather up your luggage and deliver it to your room at the lodge you are staying at in Grand Canyon National Park. All the Park concessions are run by Xanterra, including the Railway Hotel, the train, and the Park lodges, restaurants, and shops. I'm not so sure that this is a good idea - some competition might get prices more reasonable and improve quality and choices. Right now, there is really no other practical option other than the "Grand" Railway Hotel.
“Gateway to the Grand Canyon”
Good option if you plan to visit the Grand Canyon. Last year we took the train (Grand Canyon Railway) and it was a truly memorable experience, a leisurely way to travel. This way we drove from Williams to the Canyon, about an hour away. Hotel is a stonethrow away from several restaurants and many shops (particlularly recommend the Red Raven restaurant). Staff was accomodating though a bit rushed as the hotel is quite busy. Rooms are adequate, without frills. There is no formal breakfast offered (only coffee, fruit and pastries are available for purchase) but the train depot next door offers quite a selection.
“Super hotel”
We truly enjoyed our stay at the Grand Canyon RailwayHotel! It was a great trip with easy access to the train depot and to the Grand Canyon. The food was great and the rooms were very comfortable.
“Not bad”
The hotel needs a little updating but overall it wasnt too bad. The air conditioner was a little noisy and froze out the people in the bed closest to it while leaving the other side of the room a little warm. The people are very friendly and helpful. It is located at the beginning of the Grand Canyon Railroad which I highly recommend to anyone!
“Conveniently Located”
The Grand Canyon Railway Hotel was a great decision since were taking the train to the Grand Canyon the next day, and the train is within walking distance. Somehow, my train tickets were even waiting for me at the hotel when we checked in even though I had booked the hotel and train completely separate! They do have a problem with the high mineral content in their water, but several signs throughout the hotel warn you of this. The water in the sink, shower, toilet can be brownish but is supposedly safe. It is nasty tasting though, so take the bottled water when offered or use the bottled water in the room. The breakfast buffet is located in a separated building toward the train station and is only so-so. Overall very good experience and would recommend to others.
“Brown water from faucet, shower, toilet and trashy outside”
My family and I just stayed there (Aug 2010). We were extremely disappointed in the hotel. It was trashy outside - weeds all around with trash. The hotel looks barren outside. The only decent part was the lobby. The room was OK, but the awful part was the very brown water coming from the faucet, shower and in the toilet. When I called the front desk, first they said it was due to construction in the area, then they said it always happens this time of year, but it's completely safe. I said it's really bad to pay so much for a room and not even be able to take a shower. They said, well we have some bottled water at the front desk for you to drink. We were just finishing a round trip across country and this was, by far, the worst place we stayed.
“"Not Impressed Don't Go"”
I would not go again ,the water in the hotel was brown, you had to get bottled water from the front desk. They were rude and for the price it was not worth it.The pool had a terrible odor. and it was not very clean.
“Not worth the money”
The hotel was nice enough, and centrally located in downtown Williams; however it was under construction while I was there, and no concessions were made to offset the inconvenience. Also, I was not impressed by the shampoo and shower gel dispenser in the bathroom, instead of personal bottles. The water was brown (apparently from the well that supplies their water), so they gave out bottled water. And the bathroom was not thoroughly cleanned. Overall, it was not worth the money if there's someplace cheaper available in the area. .
“Under Renovation / Strong New Carpet glue smell / Poor Morning Bkfst service”
First we couldn't find the entrance at night arrival after the Grand Canyon because all signs are down for renovations. Then the room they assigned smelled so strong from the glue of new carpet that it burned our eyes and had no shower curtain. We requested a different room, and it smelled less strong, but it was dusty and the inside of the shower curtain was dirty. In the morning they have a breakfast coffee bar in the hotel or a cafe across the street, but the one lady trying to serve all of the hotel guests could not keep up and did a poor job at making latte. Unlike every hotel we stayed at on this trip, they did NOT have any coffee already made and out for guests, so you had to wait for 15 minutes til you could just get a cup of coffee, and with so many rooms and one lady selling simple breakfast items, it is just terribly inefficient way to do business.
“They care about you.”
They care that you are comfortable. They were very informative about the activities around the city and beyond.
