“Good Location, Great Price, Carpacious Room”
Having endured a cupboard sized hotel room in Paris for 5 nights the Hotel Athenaeum was a welcome respite. The room we stayed in was twice the size of its Parisian counterpart at two-thirds the price. What I also liked about this hotel is that it is really quite new, and the decor is contemporary bordering on chic. A modern hotel with all the contemporary trappings is actually quite at odds with the historical edge of Fair Firenze, and perhaps that's what makes it work - take in the sights and the gravitas of the Renaissance era during the day, but bathe in the luxury of modernity at night. Breakfast was included in the fee and it was quite good - fresh fruit salad, cereal, juices, coffee, cheeses, cold meats and cakes were all inclusive. Extra for things like eggs and bacon etc. In terms of location not bad, but the hotel is far from the centre of the action. It's about 20 minutes walk from the Ponte Vecchio which isn't alot unless it rains, then 20 minutes seems like 20 miles. The Riflessi which is the restaurant in the hotel was surprisingly good and well priced. They supplied their own in-house baked bread, as well as Tuscan olive oil. The food was tasty, and the chef managed to "create" some dishes that were unexpectedly different and unique. In room broadband internet was free all you really need is a broadband cable and a little techie know-how to really make it work. Overall I was very impressed by this hotel and would recommend to anyone travelling to Florence.
