“Great for people like us who like peace, quiet, and privacy”

This was our first stay at Sunrise Suites. Our condo (406) had very good quality bedding in the king bedroom, and good bedding in the smaller queen bedroom. The kitchen was well equipped and trouble-free. Both bathrooms were basically fine; in the master bath, the towel bar had been damaged but worked fine, and the towel hook was very loose. Also, the bathtub stopper did not work, and the sink stopper had been removed and was under the sink. We had plenty of hot water and the towels were very thick and absorbent. Pool towels were available at the front desk. The pool was quite nice and the jacuzzi was great--both clean, at good temperatures, and we saw no one using them except us! The airport is literally a block away, but there was so little air traffic, and no big jets, so the sound was not bothersome at all. We also saw Navy air training early in the evening several nights, which was interesting. Parking was more than adequate, and coin laundry facilities were available on site. We would stay there again. My only "big" complaint was that the couch was cheaply made and provided NO support. It wasn't visibly worn/torn, but looked like cheap dorm furniture. The rest of the furnishings were dated, but in good condition. If I had two requests, it would be that the owners replace the sofa with something that will last, and also that they pay for HBO, at least on the flat screen TV in the living room (the bedrooms had smaller but adequate analog TVs).

Area recommendations
If you want peace and quiet, and not the loud party atmosphere in Old Town, stay on the other side of the island like we did. Old Town does get pretty rowdy at night, and it would not be appropriate for families with underage children. We saw prostitutes the one time we stayed in Old Town at night (and it was only maybe 8-9 pm, but well after dark). There is even a clothing-optional bar on Duval St. So if you're into the party hardy atmosphere, stay close to Old Town. If you are traveling with kids or just like things a little more peaceful and quiet, stay elsewhere.
Getting around
Many people rent bicycles or scooters to get around in the Old Town area. However, we noticed that scooter rental cost more than our full size rental car!! Granted, they are easy and cheap to park, but would not have worked for us at all, as a party of 3. Hertz and Budget are among the few car rental companies that actually have pick up and drop off right at the airport, just FYI. Very convenient. Alamo and several others are about a 12 minute ride each way.
Must see
Hemingway House and Museum
Shopping
Duval Street has something for everyone in terms of shopping. I love to shop at art galleries while on vacation, and highly recommend Wild Side Gallery. They offered a selection of fine wood art, ceramics, glasswork, and paintings that really appealed to my husband and me, and their prices were reasonable--especially by Key West standards. Mallory Square has a lot of artists with small booths along the boardwalk. We saw some very interesting items there as well, including a gentleman who made aluminum wire sculptures. He made one on the spot for us that he didn't have pre-made.
Dining
There are few inexpensive dining options on Key West. If you are in the Duval St. area, Lobo's Mixed Grill (just off Duval St.) or Amigo's Tortilla Bar offer large, tasty entrees for $10 or less. Our first day in Key West, we spent $20 per person for lunch on the harbor, and quickly found out that most restaurants charge in the mid-teens for lunch entrees and $20-35 for dinner entrees.
Family-friendly activities
While we didn't get to see it, the Florida Eco-Discovery Center just off Duval St. is free, and sounded like a great activity for families. Their Facebook page has incorrect hours of operation listed, so call before you go.
Events and shows
Key West is well known for its tolerance of different lifestyles. There are a number of gay or lesbian festivals every year, and also a number of biker events. If you are "offended" by the openness of Key West due to your personal or religious beliefs, don't schedule a family visit during a festival. We just missed a pirate festival when we arrived--that would have been fun, but probably pretty bawdy now that I feel like I know Key West. It's more of an adult playground than a great place for a family vacation, though you can plan around the more "adult" places and activities. Just be sure that you realize it is NOT Disney World!
Outdoors or beach
Bahia Honda State Park and Beach on Big Pine Key (not far away from Key West) is much better than either of the Key West beaches we tried (Smather's Beach and Fort Zachary Taylor Park's beach). Bahia Honda is a true soft sand beach in its entirety, and it is warmer and more shallow for a long distance than either Key West beach. We were able to snorkel at Bahia Honda's beaches directly from the shore, but not on Key West. It's only about 45 minutes drive from the east side of Key West, and well worth the drive. It's one of the nation's top 10 beaches, and we found out why! They also offer kayak rental and offshore snorkeling at MUCH lower prices than the commercial outfits on Key West. Just call first to be sure they are offering either activity before heading out. If it's too windy for your safety or enjoyment, they'll cancel. The commercial operators will take you out (and your cash) even if you can't see your hand in front of your face when snorkeling.

“Needs Cleaned”

we checked in at 5pm and preceded to go to Mallory Square for the Sunset. When we returned my husband pulled back the sheets and found bugs.. Bed bugs! we scooped one up out of tons into a glass and called the emergency #.. The lady that answered was not nice and said she would call back.. when she did we were already packed and she stated that she couldn't find a maid to come change the sheets so she was moving us. After the bugs in the bed I am Not going to except the sheets being changed! she was surprised when she asked how long it would take to pack up and I said we already were.. When we took the glass with the bedbug in it to her she was nasty. Not really good with customer service.. She did not wow me.. Was nasty to my husband and sent us to another condo that we looked before we unpacked.. the next night the lights were on in the previous condo.. I hope they were cleaning it and fumigating it..

Area recommendations
If you have a GPS use it to find the really great restaurants.. The Half Shell was awesome along with Bo"s. But the best was seeing the Iguanas outside of TGIF off US 1.. The Fury Snorkeling cruise is a must do..
Must see
Go to Hemingway's house.. definatley do the snorkel tour with the Fury boat adventures.. well worth the money..
